Ch. 22. Ella's Pressure

Seeing his boss cry made Jason remain silent. He didn’t have the heart to interfere and didn’t know what to do. Eventually, he chose to get in the car and sit in the driver’s seat, silently listening to Helena's sobs.

“Why are you just sitting there?” Helena asked, her voice trembling as she looked into the rearview mirror.

Hearing this, the man in the black suit looked back at her through the mirror. “I’m sorry, Miss. I don’t know what to do. I understand this is hard for you, so I thought it best to let you cry and gather your thoughts.”

“Why do you always act like you know everything?”

“I’m sorry, Miss.”

“Give me a tissue,” the girl demanded quickly.

Jason hurriedly grabbed a few tissues and handed them to Helena, who was sitting in the back seat. She then blew her nose loudly.

After doing so, Helena handed the tissues back to Jason, who took them without the slightest sign of disgust.

“I never expected this to happen to my relationship with Aiden,” Helena began, just as Jason finished disposing of the tissues in a trash can conveniently located in the parking lot.

Helena's words made the man glance back at her in the mirror, watching as she looked down. Finally, the girl spoke again. “Aiden and I have been together for four years. Does that mean my relationship with him was pointless? Have I just been wasting my time?”

“I don’t think so, Miss. None of us can predict what will happen in the future. Besides, Aiden was never good enough to be with you.”

Instead of calming down, Helena’s sobs grew louder. “Don’t just sit there! Come over here and hold me!”

“But Miss…”

“I need a hug, Jason. I just want to feel at peace,” the girl said softly, making Jason, who had hesitated, feel touched.

After a moment of thought, the man opened the car door, got out, and sat beside Helena. As soon as he did, Helena quickly wrapped her arms around the man, who was four years older than her. “I can’t handle all of this, Jason.”

Although he was unsure, Jason finally began to pat Helena's back gently. Even though Helena often asked to be hugged, Jason always felt awkward because, after all, their relationship was strictly professional.

“Jason, tell me, what’s wrong with me?” The girl was still sobbing. With her strong and independent personality, Jason never imagined Helena could be this sad.

Especially since, from what Jason had observed, their relationship had always seemed to flow naturally. Often, it was Helena who put in more effort, though Jason had come to know the childish side of his boss.

Yes, like right now, for example. Jason's hand, which had been on Helena's back, moved to her head, gently stroking her hair. “You did nothing wrong, Miss. From what I’ve seen, you’ve always been the one fighting alone. Aiden never reciprocated your efforts.”

As the man finished his sentence, Helena let go of the hug and looked up at him with a sorrowful expression she couldn’t hide. “You knew this and didn’t tell me? How could you be so cruel?”

“I didn’t dare, Miss. From what I saw, you loved Aiden very much. Besides, I was just observing; I don’t know the full truth about Aiden.”

The girl pulled away from Jason entirely, her face showing frustration as she pouted. At that moment, Jason, who accidentally noticed it, lost focus. So, before anything inappropriate could happen, he turned his face away. “What can I do to cheer you up, Miss?”

“I don’t want to do anything right now. Let’s just go home.”

So, Jason nodded quickly before opening the door and returning to the driver’s seat. At a moderate speed, the two of them hurried back to Helena’s family home.

The girl’s face looked tired as she walked into the house. Just then, she noticed an older woman sitting on the sofa reading a newspaper. As soon as Helena arrived, the woman looked up immediately. “Is something wrong, Princess? Your face looks so sad.”

“I don’t want to talk about it. Can I just go rest?”

Seeing Helena continue walking, the woman named Ella closed the newspaper and stood up. “Next time, don’t act rashly, Helena. You know what you did could ruin my reputation?”

For a moment, the girl, whose face was still a mess from crying, paused. Slowly, she turned her body and looked at her mother, who was now walking toward her. “Don’t think I don’t know what you did, Princess?”

“I won’t ask how you found out. I just want you to stop spying on me. I’m your daughter, not a criminal. Jason is enough to keep an eye on me, do we really need someone else?” Helena stared at her mother boldly. She just couldn’t understand why Ella would treat her like this.

Ella raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “Are you daring to defy me, Darling? Have you forgotten that everything I do is for your own good?” She paused to see Helena’s expression change. “Don’t ever say I didn’t warn you about Aiden. But you always denied every piece of evidence I gave you.”

“I didn’t know it would end like this either. Mom, I feel betrayed too. I’ve been deceived for years. Do you think that doesn’t hurt enough?”

A thin, almost imperceptible smile appeared on the woman’s face. “What do you know about heartbreak? You’re asking the wrong person, Darling. Listen, do whatever you want with Aiden and your heartbreak. But next time, if this happens again, act like an elegant woman. Don’t play it rough like what happened today.”

Hearing those words, Helena reflexively looked at her with a confused expression. “Mom, even after all this, you’re still thinking about reputation? What about my feelings?”

“Feelings won’t feed you or support your lifestyle. Besides, I warned you about Aiden from the start. What else was lacking? Helena, from now on, I don’t want to hear any more bad news about you. You chose to be with Aiden against my wishes, and now you’re paying the price. So this time, listen to me. Chase your dreams and focus on your career. As long as you do that, your life will be just fine.”
