Alecia Angia is an independent and resilient woman. Since childhood, she was raised by her uncle Johan in her hometown after her parents died. Now, after years of traveling and working hard in the big city, Alecia decides to return to her hometown with the main purpose of visiting her parents' graves.
Alecia's return was welcomed with joy by Uncle Johan who had not seen her for a long time. However, behind this happiness, Uncle Johan had other plans for Alecia. Three days after Alecia's arrival, Johan revealed that he wanted to set Alecia up with Boy Aland, a manager at a large company and the son of Johan's best friend. Boy had just returned from the city, and according to Johan, this was a golden opportunity to unite two families who had long been friends.
Alecia, who has always lived independently and made her own decisions, is shocked and distressed by her uncle's sudden plans. Although she respected and owed Uncle Johan a lot, Alecia also wanted to be in control of her own love life. But because of her uncle's strong desire to set Alecia up with Alecia's boy, Alecia was forced to accept the match.
Alecia stared at her uncle with a determined look, the night grew silent as she spoke her words heavily.
"Alright Uncle, I will accept this arranged marriage. However, please, don't increase the debt burden on their family. I don't want to make things difficult for them in the future." The dim light in the room illuminated Alecia's courageous face. Alecia's uncle, sitting on the opposite chair, bowed his head. He knew that this arranged marriage was indeed due to the debt he had with his best friend. His heart was heavy, but he nodded slowly, accepting Alecia's request reluctantly.
"Yes, Alecia. I understand and will honor your wishes," he said with a voice that trembled slightly. Her acceptance symbolized the end of their conversation that night, filled with mixed feelings.
The meeting of the two families was held in Alice's family's modest house, whose walls were peeling off. Boy, who sat with a sturdy posture and a sharp gaze, caught the attention of everyone in the room with his neat appearance. Meanwhile, Alice just sat quietly in a corner of the room, watching with a pounding heart.
Boy's father proudly shared that his son was a manager in a big company in the city, leaving all Alice's family members in awe, except Alice herself. She just drummed her fingers under the table, feeling like an item that would be shipped just to pay off her family's debts. Alice's uncle, who was also present, could only bow his head, feeling helpless over the situation.
After a short conversation, the family agreed that the wedding would be a simple affair in the village. With no chance for Alice to get to know Boy better, she had to prepare to move to the city with him.
The night before departure, Alice stood in front of her bedroom window, looking at the blinking stars, trying to find answers. The next day, dressed in a simple bridal outfit, she was escorted by her family to the aisle. Boy, who looked dashing beside her, was oblivious to Alice's turbulent heart.
After the wedding ceremony, Alice was taken by Boy to the big city. The journey was spent in silence, with Alice staring blankly out the window, musing about her new life that would begin without love, only calculations and debt looming.
Alecia arrived at the house that Boy had bought before. Boy called Alecia. Boy said that Alecia's room was downstairs. Boy did not want to share a room with Alecia. Boy pointed out his true colors to Alecia. Boy is arrogant and feels highly placed. While Alecia is a country woman. Boy didn't know that Alecia had been living in the big city.
Boy opened the door of the big house he had just bought. With confident steps, he entered the room, followed by Alecia who looked hesitant. "You can stay in the room downstairs," Boy said, pointing to the stairs that led to the basement. His voice was cold, without looking at Alecia.
Alecia just nodded slowly, swallowing the disappointment that was starting to build up. She realized that even though she was married to Boy, the distance between them was far greater than a wedding ring could bridge. Boy, with his strapping posture and arrogant gaze, walked back into the living room, leaving Alecia still standing by the door.
Inwardly, Alecia felt sick. She knew that Boy had always looked down on her origins as a country woman, even though she had lived and adapted to life in the big city for a long time. Alecia looked around, into the house that was supposed to symbolize a new beginning, but now felt like a luxurious prison.
Boy, without turning around, said again, "I don't want us to get too close, so you better take care of yourself there." The harshness in his voice made Alecia feel even more lonely and isolated.
Alecia walked slowly towards the room Boy had indicated, carrying with her the hopes that now seemed to be fading. Although she was now his wife, in Boy's mind, she was nothing more than an unwanted guest. Alecia decided not to mind Boy's attitude, hoping that someday she could see beyond it.
Alecia adjusts to the new home, following Boy's rhythms and routines faithfully. Every morning, she wakes up early, making sure breakfast is ready on the table before Boy wakes up. She tries to remember all the little things Boy likes, from the way the scrambled eggs are cooked to the strength of the coffee brewed.
However, Alecia's every move was always watched with a cold stare from Boy. "Why don't you ever wear clothes I like?" Boy asked one day over breakfast. Alecia bowed her head, feeling like a failure as a wife. "Sorry, Boy, I... will pay attention next time," she replied hoarsely, trying to hold back a deep sense of disappointment.
At night, Alecia often found herself alone in her room, staring at the ceiling, thinking about her decision. She knew there was no love, but the hope that one day Boy would see her as more than just an unwanted life companion, haunted her constantly. She hugged her pillow, trying to soothe the disappointment that constantly raged in her chest, while hoping that tomorrow would be better.
Boy strode quickly out of the house at the crack of dawn, his briefcase slung over his shoulder. He had a serious look on his face, focused on the work that awaited him. The door to the house was closed, and he would not return until the sky was dark. Alice, who always woke up early to prepare breakfast, watched her husband from the window with a hopeful look. With her apron still tied around her waist, she whispered to herself, "I have to be better, for Boy." Her heart pounded, wanting to always be considered perfect in Boy's eyes.
