Ch. 4Chapter 4

SARAH’S POV
I arrived home and found my father in the living room reading the daily newspaper. The moment he saw me, he dropped the newspaper on the center table and faced me.
“Tell me you got the job.”
“I got the job and will have to move in with them.” I replied as he burst out in soft chuckles.
“I’m going to be a millionaire soon.” He burst out again in laughter which made me feel the sharp pain of having such a heartless man as a father.
“Is that what you really want, father? To watch me suffer just for your own selfish interest?” I asked, unbelievable.
I know I shouldn’t say those words to him but I just can’t keep holding the pain back and watch him have complete control over my life.
“What did you say? You’re the biggest problem I had to face when you were born, that's why I lost everything I ever worked for.”
“Do you know how much I spent on your treatment when you were suffering from leukemia? Don’t you ever say such words to me? You’re the reason why I had to divorce your mother just to find peace and happiness once again. All I’m doing right now is for you to repay me for all I lost during those years, do you understand me?” He added, glaring at me with rage before walking out of the house.
Is it my fault I had to go through that process as a child?
“You’re not worth my time so I won’t waste any but the next time you utter such words to my husband then you won’t live to regret your actions.” My step mother uttered from behind.
“That’s for my father to decide and not you. I’ve had enough being treated like a stranger.” I voiced out and walked out on her.
At least working as a nanny isn’t bad after all. I get to stay under the same roof with the family of the child and not with the family that treats me like crap.
I got to my room and hopped on the bed recalling all the rules my new boss had laid down.
I don’t know why I feel I knew him from somewhere back in Florida but I guess I might be wrong about him. Sometimes, people tend to have the same voice which might just be the same with the man who I don’t even know as well.
After resting a bit, I began to pack up my suitcase and set out for my new home where I will have much time for myself and not suffocate.
I dragged the suitcase to the living room where I found my father with our next door neighbor having a discussion.
“Good afternoon Mr. Jonas.” I greeted him politely, while my father kept staring at me.
“The job requires me to live in their home. I had wanted to tell you about it when you brought up that discussion.”
“How will I receive the funds if you’re gone?”
“I’ll come home to drop it off.”
“Did she get offered a high paying job?” Mr. Jonas asked.
“Yes, Jonas.”
“Congratulations Sarah but what job is it?”
“It’s a nanny’s job in a mansion.”
“What kind of mansion? I hope it isn’t what I’m thinking it is?”
“What’s all this question about and what are you acting all worked up about?” My father questioned.
“I just want to confirm my guess. Is it the job offer that came in yesterday from the Russell mansion I told you about, Jacob?”
“Of course, Jonas. Why are you acting this way?”
“She mustn’t go there, Jacob. I should have warned you about the owner in the first place.” He uttered, with evidence of fear in his eyes.
“What about him, Jonas?”
“He’s the most cold and ruthless mafia don, who slaughters his enemies without blinking an eye.” He stated, empathizing with the last words.
“What’s all these Jonas? Are you trying to scare me off just so you can make your daughter work for the owner?” My father questioned in annoyance.
I feel Mr. Jonas might actually be telling the truth because the way the man questioned me showed he’s indeed a powerful man. I just hope I can make it out alive if I’m able to abide by all the rules he has stated.
I wonder why such a handsome man tends to be cold and ruthless. He has all the physical features every woman wants to see in a man.
“Do you think I would ever joke with something like that?”
“Who knows? Perhaps you’re just jealous I’m close to becoming wealthy.”
“You're a really pathetic father to have dragged your daughter into such a mess just for your selfish interest. Sarah, please be safe, child. You’ve a difficult task ahead of you and it’s all because of your father’s greed for money.”
“That’s it, Jonas. Get the hell out of my house. You’re no longer needed, you piece of shit!” My father fired, which made my step mother and Eva rush out of their various rooms.
“Take care Sarah. I’ll be praying for you since you’re a wonderful child and I hope your father here regrets his actions.” He said and walked out.
“Such a worthless fellow who only wants to see me die being poor.” My father cussed out before heading to his bedroom.
I stood still unable to move or say anything on the spot. I don’t know if I should go back to the mansion or stay back?
What if he comes finding me? How do I explain myself? I don’t know what to do at this point. I’ve never been so lost and confused with myself right now.
“Will you keep standing or get going?” My step mother questioned.
“You have no choice since you’re already hired. You just have to go and face your doom.” Eva uttered, chuckling like a bitch.
I don’t know why she loves seeing me in pain or danger but I know I’ll just be fine in the mansion as long as I don’t pick my nose in his affairs and abide by his rules.
Without saying any word to them, I pulled my suitcase and walked out of the apartment with the intention to prove to them that I won’t fall on the mafia’s bad side rather on the good side.
