Ch. 4Chapter 4

"Mom, please pray for me to be accepted for the job." Simon bid farewell to his mother before leaving home.

Simon was quite nervous, but he prepared himself to meet Sandra's family. He remembered what Sandra had said that evening, although she was the one who asked him to work, at least Simon had to prepare himself to face them, especially with the application, and some important documents as other requirements, just like job seekers usually do.

Perhaps for a trivial reason, but now Simon understood why Sandra asked him to do this, Formality! What else could it be?

"Simon!" a voice called out from a distance. Simon turned to the sound, and saw Sandra, the fair-skinned woman approaching him.

Seeing her waiting for a long time, Simon felt awkward. "I already said yesterday, you don't need to bother picking me up." Sandra, now standing beside him, just grinned.

"No problem at all, let's get in!"

Simon followed Sandra to the car, then sat beside her. "Can you drive?"

Simon shook his head, "Sorry, I still don't dare to, if I force myself, it might end up fatal."

"Are you kidding?" Sandra seemed slightly doubtful.

"Seriously, I actually learned to drive a few times, but when it comes to trying it alone, I don't dare."

"I hope it won't happen again in the future. Today we have to be quick, my mother is hosting a family feast, I have to take you there and this is the opportunity to introduce you to them."

Simon remained silent, even as Sandra drove her car. He felt extremely nervous, attending a wealthy family event was not something casual. Especially since Sandra seemed to come from an upper-class family. Perhaps he was just lucky to get to know a woman like Sandra, that's what he was thinking now.

But Simon was still anxious and worried about not being accepted there. "No, I have to face it boldly," he thought with determination.

When Sandra's car stopped, Simon took a deep breath while observing the surroundings. In the parking area, two cars were lined up. "This is our house, it's not too crowded inside, because only my uncle and aunt are invited. So don't be nervous, okay?"

Simon looked at his outfit, he thought it was decent, although not branded, but he felt confident with his appearance today.

They both entered, Simon noticed the dining table full of delicious dishes, but he didn't focus on that, the feeling of anxiety still haunted him.

The appearance of Sandra and Simon garnered gazes from Sandra's family, even her uncle and aunt stared at him for a long time, as if observing something. "Sandra, who is this? Where is Gerald?"

Before answering, Sandra invited Simon to sit in the remaining chair. "He's my friend, and as for Gerald... Forget that man, you have no idea about his nature and mischief out there. I truly regret meeting him.”

"Sandra..."
Her words were cut short as Mrs. Leslie, Sandra's mother, signaled her to be quiet.

"Could you introduce who your friend is? What is his job? Where did he graduate from?"
Simon fell silent, remembering that he hadn't graduated from college, his education stopped due to financial constraints. Should he admit that he only graduated from high school?

Simon looked at them alternately, trying to steady his breath before answering. "I'm Simon, actually…"

"Mom, dad, I'm going to hire Simon as my assistant, he was the top graduate three years ago, I've seen his files and all his grades are excellent, he is a perfect fit to work with me." Sandra quickly responded to the situation.

Simon took a deep breath, awaiting their response. "Not possible!" Sandra and Simon were shocked by the response, "Sandra, I refuse to let you hire a person whose background is unclear, all of this will endanger you…"

"Endanger? So Gerald isn't dangerous? Dad, it's actually the ones considered good who are the most dangerous," Sandra took out her phone and tapped the screen a few times to show them. "Please watch and listen to this video carefully."

Leslie took her daughter's phone and played a video that lasted about a minute. All eyes were focused on Sandra's phone screen with curiosity. "Is this Gerald?"

"Still not convinced by the video? I filmed it myself. So it's not edited or staged. I have seen and heard it myself, and that's what the dangerous man said," Sandra explained firmly.

Sandra's uncle and aunt exchanged glances, they didn't comment on this, but their looks toward Simon were still cynical and mocking.

"But you still can't just recruit an assistant, Sandra, what is his work history? What are his abilities? We need to know that. Just by looking at his outfit, he looks like a villager, where did you find him?"

These were very offensive words, Simon had suspected that this would happen, he then stood up and wouldn't sulk or get angry because of it. He didn't want to be seen in a worse light after being demeaned, responding calmly was Simon's choice.

"I'm sorry, Sir, Ma'am. Thank you for allowing me to enter this house, but it seems I have to leave in a hurry and…"

Suddenly, Sandra stood up from her chair,
"Daddy, it was me who recruited him, so I have the right to choose who works with me."

"I apologize, Sandra, I think I should go, maybe we can meet again another time." Simon said as politely as possible, intending to leave even as Sandra tried to stop him.

Sandra looked at her parents with an angry look, flipping her hair in front of them according to Sandra, was also useless.

Meanwhile, Simon, who was almost at the door, felt very uncomfortable, his heart hurt and he wanted to get out of there quickly.

"Wait!" Mrs. Leslie, who had been silent all this time, finally spoke up. She stood up firmly and looked at Simon with empathy, "Simon, don't leave yet, come back and sit down. I want to talk with you."

Simon was surprised by Mrs. Sandra's attitude towards him, she looked different among them.

Simon hesitated, but Sandra instead fetched him and brought him back to his seat. Simon's heart was pounding, his mind and heart in turmoil until the woman who was Sandra's mother continued, "Simon, I see Sandra trusts you so much, are you sure you want to work with her?"

Simon didn't fully understand Mrs. Sandra's meaning, he was somewhat hesitant to answer. "Madam, do you mean my seriousness in working? If so, of course I am serious, I need this job and my sister will be finishing college soon, I also need the money for that." As he spoke, Simon looked down, hiding his teary eyes.

No, Simon instead said something that made him even more cornered! Sandra felt anxious and wiped her sweaty face.

Isn't it strange, that today it was Simon who was under the spotlight, not Sandra, but why was Sandra so anxious?

There is something that cannot be expressed in words, perhaps Sandra has another plan, but she definitely has to hear her mommy's decision as well.

"Simon." Once again Mrs. Leslie called him, Simon felt frozen in his seat, but he had to be ready and listen carefully to Mrs. Leslie's next words.

"I appreciate those who work with my daughter, but I have to protect and ensure her safety. So what I'm about to say now, I want to give you the opportunity to work with Sandra, be her assistant."

Oh my goodness! Simon couldn't imagine those words coming out so easily from Sandra's mother, a mix of joy and gratitude overwhelmed him. Even Sandra, who was almost desperate at that moment because of her mother's slightly harsh words.

On one side, Simon was happy, but on the other side, he was slightly hurt by Sandra's father's harsh words. Who knows, perhaps this was just a test before applying for the job? Or maybe it originated from their hearts to corner Simon previously? But today, Simon chose to focus on the positive side, it was better than having a negative assumption towards others.

"But isn't he a man..."
It seemed Sandra's uncle and aunt wanted to protest Sandra's mother, but the woman named Mrs. Leslie raised her hand immediately. "I have the right to make all decisions, Sandra my daughter, let him choose what he wants, since he was little, he was strictly controlled and always obedient. Although he is still young, his opinion might be more meaningful." Then she turned to her husband.

"Honey, Sandra is already an adult, she can handle her own problems, so don't worry."

At that moment, Simon looked at Sandra, seeking approval. "Simon, I look forward to working with him..." Sandra said confidently as she reached out her hand. "Congratulations…”
