Kath entered the courtyard of Viscount Russell's mansion in a very bedraggled state. The maids there rushed to greet the familiar Kath at the mansion; some took off their coats and wiped Kath's wet face with a towel. Kath didn't seem to give a smile at all, like she often did every time she set foot there.
She waltzed with dignity towards a place she believed was where her older sister was. Entering the hall with its luxurious and classic interior, she heard ceramic shards being thrown and jumping when they touched the marble tiles she was standing on.
A maid crying in front of Eleana Russell while prostrating herself, Kath was stunned for a moment, seeing how vile Eleana was who was now kicking her own maid who had accompanied her here and there for fifteen years. Anne's maid did not budge, even though the hissing of pain reached the solar plexus.
Rowena took Anne to be Eleana's personal maid fifteen years ago, when Kath was not even given a maid to accompany her. Kath knew how loyal Anne was to Eleana, and there was no way Anne's service could be judged badly.
"I have to go meet that bitch; get out of my sight!!" Tears welled up in Eleana's eyes, ready to spill even when even a drop Kath knew that Eleana never cried. He now felt the pain inside.
"No ma'am. You're pregnant and can't travel far," lied Anne. Kath knew Anne's maid really didn't want her mistress to get into a fight and appear in the news papers for the umpteenth time.
"Move! Damn it!"
"Elea!!!" Kath's call stopped Eleana's attempt to kick Anne out of the way in front of her. Eleana shed tears; she sighed and called out for Kath.
"What happened? Control your emotions!" cried Kath, walking quickly and standing right in front of Anne to protect her. Here Kath turns into a big sister, as a big sister should be when Eleana again acts emotional, even though Eleana is much older than her.
"I have to teach that woman a lesson, Kath!" Eleana snapped, but she had no desire to rush through Kath or kick her as she had with Anne.
"Which woman?!" asked Kath, sarcastic.
"Darrellyn Orva, that bitch has seduced my husband and hasn't brought him home for days," complained Eleana while stroking her stomach, which was starting to bulge, making Kath feel a little sorry for her, but it was clear that this was not a commendable act.
"Isn't it enough that Thomas is already yours? He won't have an affair anymore—more precisely, the person you think is a seducer barely has that title if you weren't the one who made it the past." Elena flinched, and Kath defended the woman who was her rival; it was so annoying for her.
"You just defended my enemy, Kath." Elena finally broke through Kath, walking with her other maids to go to the Orva residence.
"Keep watching over her," Kath said to Anne, who was still lying on the floor. Anne nodded and rushed to follow Eleana outside the mansion.
Kath walked towards a pink sofa located beside a window. The outside view shows the large grassy backyard of the mansion and an artificial fountain in the middle of the lounger there. It should be more beautiful if there were various kinds of colorful flowers, but since Eleana was living here, the mansion didn't have any living flowering plants. Eleana said she was allergic to flowers and asked all the maids to trim them, and only plastic flowers were allowed in the mansion.
And Thomas Russell just obeyed, even though it was his late mother who planted all kinds of flowers there. Eleana should have been a little grateful when Thomas chose her over Darrellyn from the Orva family. Eleana has a bad temper, is hard to control, cares about appearances, and doesn't help with the books at all. Eleana says it's complicated; while you can pay people to do it, why should she do it? Eleana is also very crazy about jewelry; she doesn't know how much money Thomas spent to buy these items to satisfy Eleana's desires.
She said Thomas had to sell fields in Hamilton to buy a wedding anniversary ring last year. Eleana is indeed exaggerated; her attitude is also not reasonable. Except for the fact that Eleana loves Kath like her own sister. Like now, Eleana gave Kath access to come and enter at will in her mansion; she also asked all the maids to respect Kath.
Kath was grateful for that; even though Kath didn't like Eleana's character, Kath never had any intention of bringing Eleana down. Even Eleana's hard times when she was not married and her name was always in the newspapers every time she did something or every time she followed a season. Eleana is like an artist; there are those who adore her—mostly men. There are also those who hate it. All the women competed to take her down, to find fault with Eleana, and spread it. Only Kath was always there beside her and gave her encouragement, even though Kath also knew where her half sister was right and wrong.
Kath's mind was divided by thinking about what Eleana would do at the Orva family's residence. They have to be prepared for Eleana's reappearance in the gossip newspapers tomorrow morning, which means their family will also suffer the consequences.
Kath got up and walked quickly out of the mansion. The hem of her dress was in direct contact with the marble floor, which was still strewn with shards of ceramic that Eleana had thrown earlier. No one had cleaned it yet; all the maids in the front area brought Eleana to the Orva family's residence, while the kitchen maids were still busy preparing dishes for dinner tonight. Kath was almost toward the front door, her mouth screaming for a guard. "Peter, please go to Lady Margareth and persuade her to shut up about whatever Eleana will bring back when she comes home. I'm sure she will cause a mess." Kath took off a diamond necklace around her neck and handed it to Peter.
"I will replace your task of guarding this front area; instead, please carry out my orders," said Kath while giving her necklace to Peter's hand.
"How could you possibly replace my job, my lady? I'd better look for Uncle Ben behind to replace my position until I get home." Peter didn't really want to give up his job to Kath, even though Kath was his employer too. If he let this happen, then he would end up being scolded by Eleana when she got home.
"Uncle Ben has his own work behind him. It's getting to dusk soon; I beg you to hurry up now." Peter looked flustered; behind his tall body he couldn't hide the fact that Peter was still very young, maybe only five years apart from Kath, and Peter still looked so innocent—except for his martial arts and weapons, which could not be underestimated. "All right, my Lady. I'll be right back." Peter bowed politely, turned around, and immediately ran to get his horse.
