Adorefill Hall, residence of Mr. Aldora
The sun illuminates the living room of Mr. Aldora's residence during the day. Katherine and Eleana were playing in a corner with a crochet doll each holding, Rowena among them, sitting on a sofa, enjoying her feet being massaged by the housemaid. While Mrs. Sofia, Kath's mother, was in the kitchen helping the maids serve lunch for their family. A few hours ago Kath heard Rowena say that she really admired her mother's cooking and wanted to eat it this afternoon.
Kath actually objected a little when what Rowena was doing was relaxing while her mother was busy in the kitchen making sure her dishes were filled with the household's favorite foods. Kath sighed; she was starting to feel uncomfortable with the presence of Rowena and Eleana in the midst of their family. Not once or twice had they treated her and her mother as if they owned Adorefill Hall.
Kath turned her gaze to Eleana, paying close attention to the beautiful face that Kath knew was not much different from herself, and even other people often thought they were twins. Eleana Hazel's eyes, her lips, the curves of her eyebrows, and her red hair all looked the same even though they had different mothers, as did the one-year age difference.
"Yesterday I pranked my tutor in the toilet." Eleana suddenly told Kath.
"I locked it from the outside and put a mouse in the toilet; it screamed from inside," continued Eleana, looking ridiculous when this nine-year-old girl instead of feeling guilty continued with a laugh. Kath was silent, not responding even when Eleana's laughter invited him to laugh at the poor tutor.
"But after Mrs. Sofia came and saved her, she asked me to apologize to Miss Margaret." Eleana's face suddenly became gloomy, as if someone had pulled her toy away.
"After apologizing, Miss Margaret said that she would resign because she was annoyed with me. After all, who would want to have a tutor like her? I've never understood her upbringing in the slightest." Eleana squeezed her crochet doll, punched it several times, and pulled her hair as if it were Miss Margaret.
Kath was speechless; seeing Eleana's anger made her grateful that they had different emotions. Eleana was still venting her anger when suddenly a commotion was heard in the kitchen. Some of the maids screamed Mrs. Sofia's name, making Kath stunned and immediately run towards the kitchen.
"Mrs.Sofia!? Mrs.Sofia!?" Several maids held Mrs. Aldora's unsteady body, then Rowena's footsteps were finally heard approaching the kitchen before Kath, who ran there first.
"What happened to Sofia?!" Rowena asked when she arrived in the kitchen, but things got really panicked when Mrs. Sofia spit out white foam from her mouth.
"MAMAAA...!" Kath screamed, seeing her mother unconscious and foaming at the mouth made Kath run towards the kitchen quickly; however, "Don't let Kath come here!!" Rowena's screams were heard. Several maids blocked Kath's movement from outside.
Kath was crying and trying her best to get to her mother in the kitchen, but several maids stopped her in the doorway. "I'm going to tell dad to fire you all if I can't get to my mom!!" screamed little Kath. The maids started to get a little confused by Kath's threats, but again, Rowena emphasized her words by not allowing Kath to enter. Eleana also arrived with a crochet doll that she had beaten just now; she gave Kath a hug and pulled her away from the kitchen.
Unfortunately, somehow Kath wanted to obey Eleana, "Your mother will be fine. Let my mother take care of it; it's not good for young children to see a scene like this." Eleana's words stopped the movement through the wall made by the servants for Kath. Eleana took Kath to the room; during the way to the room, Kath couldn't stop crying, and Eleana embraced her while giving light strokes on her shoulder.
"It's okay; let my mother take care of it. Calm down, and we can play together again." Kath just nodded, even though when she got to Kath's room she just kept quiet and daydreamed while Eleana was busy with her doll making a scene in the imagination of a nine-year-old girl.
Time passed towards evening; no one came to their room. And Eleana fell asleep in the room with Katherine, who was silent and daydreaming beside her. No one had knocked on their door since noon, and Kath was locked in with Eleana's word not to come out until Rowena came to let them out. Supposedly, by now her father had come home from his business trip and met Kath to give her a big hug and a kiss goodnight; then they would be getting ready for dinner.
I don't know why the eight-year-old girl's feelings are so erratic. The roar of the wind pushed the bedroom window open, and the curtains swaying added an eerie feel to the precarious atmosphere. Eleana woke up, felt sorry for Kath's condition, who looked gloomy, "I'll check the situation outside; you stay here." In her heart, Kath thanked her; now her eyes flashed a hopeful glint at Eleana. But as Eleana climbed down the bed, the bedroom door opened and Rowena's figure walked towards the two of them.
"Kath, say goodbye before your mother's body is buried." Kath's world had collapsed; she wasn't even told what the chronology was after the incident this afternoon in the kitchen. Kath ran out with tears that had spilled; she saw her father with a pensive, flat face.
Kath was really angry at that time because she saw her father, who had not shed tears at all because of her mother's departure. Even though little Kath screamed hysterically, her father didn't budge, either to cover up his sadness or because he wasn't sad at all—which made it clear that Kath had lost respect for her own father since then.
Kath never had a good relationship with her father after that day. Mr. Aldora often plays with Eleana; even if he approaches Kath, Kath stays away from him. Until the departure of Mr. Aldora, who left Rowena and her two children for some reason, Kath never spoke to him again.
