“How busy are you, Kavita? When did you get home?”
The two women’s attention was diverted when Deryl’s younger sister appeared in their midst.
“It’s off to work again,” Kavita said as she slung her bag over her shoulder and stepped away from the house.
From the way Deryl’s sister-in-law was even more surprised by her presence, Kavita was certain that Yura’s existence had been officially acknowledged.
“Deryl! Bro, I have something to say!”
Deryl, who was eating bread in the kitchen, reflexively turned his head when he heard Karin’s voice.
“What are you shouting about?”
“I met Kavita earlier, she’s gone home!”
“Indeed, so what?”
“Kavita had a face-to-face meeting with Yura!”
“Let it be, they both have to know each other to get along.” Deryl replied casually, making Karin’s brow furrow in confusion.
“So ... Did Kavita know that you remarried?”
“I know, where is Kavita now?”
“Working, she says ....”
“Let it be, she’ll come home too—her contract with the boss is up, she’ll have no choice but to come back to this house and accept Yura as her sister.”
Karin could only remain silent as she watched Deryl eat a large piece of sponge bread, looking greedy and unburdened by the disappointment that his first wife was now carrying.
Meanwhile, with every fiber of wheat that Deryl swallows, there are drops of Kavita’s sweat that she squeezes tirelessly.
“How delicious ... first wife is back, second wife awaits!”
Karin shuddered, and chose to leave the kitchen immediately.
Outside, Kavita stops a passing taxi and asks the driver to take her back to the Danadyaksa family home. She had no choice but to go back there again, as officially her marriage contract with Ezra only really ended in one week.
The butler greeted Kavita as usual and let her in without much question.
Having already taken a day off work, Kavita decided not to show up at the office and stayed in the room she’d been living in for almost a year.
Logically, being Ezra’s contract wife had made Kavita’s personal life a hundred and eighty degrees better than before. However, that did not make her turn her back on Deryl who was at his lowest point.
In fact, Kavita willingly paid off her husband’s debts in the hope that their future would be much better.
And now, after their economy has started to strengthen, Deryl is paying her back with a betrayal.
Regardless of Yura and Deryl’s status as husband and wife, Kavita still felt that her husband was being deceitful.
“Why did you come back again? Shouldn’t you be at your husband’s house?”
Ezra stood tall and imposing before Kavita, who sat pensively on the steps of his grand circular house.
“Your contract as a wife still has one week left, is this how you finish work?” Ezra comments coldly.
Kavita was taken aback and hurriedly stood up to greet Ezra.
“Sorry, Sir!” she said as she reached for Ezra’s briefcase like any other day.
“Have you prepared the files for the termination of the contract?” asks Ezra as he walks towards the office with Kavita following close behind.
“Not yet, Sir ....”
“Not yet? I thought you came back here because you wanted to tell me about it.”
Ezra sits down in his work chair while Kavita continues to stand in front of her boss with only a desk to look at.
“I ... I did want to tell you something, Sir ...” Kavita says carefully.
“About the termination of our contract, right?”
“No, Sir.”
“Then?”
Kavita takes a deep breath to calm her racing heart, and only then does she speak.
“I ... I want to extend the duration of our marriage contract,” Kavita says, pushing her pride to the brink.
“What?”
Kavita doesn’t dare look Ezra directly in the face, so she deliberately shifts her gaze towards the table.
“That’s it, Sir. I want to extend the duration of this marriage contract ....”
“You need more money apparently, so what does your husband do while you’re struggling to work with me?
Kavita was silent, she didn’t take Ezra’s question seriously who usually had no interest in knowing other people’s business.
However, since it’s a marriage contract, Ezra often asks questions about Kavita’s background, including her domestic problems.
Like in the past, when Kavita had the audacity to offer Ezra the marriage contract for the first time, along with an honest excuse about Deryl’s actions that had plunged her into a deep pit of debt.
“While I was working ... it turned out that my husband ... secretly remarried without my knowledge,” Kavita continued stammeringly. “He added another wife ... without asking my permission first ....”
Ezra folded his arms across his chest.
“Then what do you expect from this marriage contract if it’s extended again? It can’t be that there’s no purpose behind it, right?”
Kavita nodded, dealing with an intelligent man like Ezra did not require much ado.
“My husband thinks I have no choice but to accept his decision, so ... I want to take all my rights back—I’m not willing ... to have my hard work enjoyed by a young wife without any effort ....”
Ezra loosens his hands and looks at Kavita more intensely.
“Okay, that’s your goal going forward. For me personally, what are the benefits of extending this marriage contract?”
Kavita was silent for a few moments.
“Of course, the benefits you will get are not much different from the past ... Where I will be on full-time standby to serve all your needs like a personal assistant. How’s that, Sir?”
“That’s all? No difference or additional benefits at all?”
Kavita thought hard again. Doggone it! Judging by the tone of his voice, Ezra doesn’t seem very interested in extending the duration of the marriage contract.
Kavita, on the other hand, needs Ezra’s money to fulfil her wishes relatively quickly.
“Why extend the contract if it only benefits one party?” Ezra commented again. “You understand the principles of co-operation, right?”
Kavita nodded. “A good partnership is one that is mutually beneficial to both parties.”
“It’s good that you understand, so make sure you know what you’re doing.” Ezra emphasised. “I also have nothing to lose, so make sure you draft the contract with clauses that are favorable to me.”
There was no other choice, Kavita had to fulfil her wish no matter what.
“Yes, Sir. I will draft the contract as soon as possible,” Kavita promised. “I will also complete the remainder of the previous contract to the best of my ability so that you are not disappointed, excuse me.”
