Beryl didn't expect that what he saw in the gold shop was his mother-in-law. Viona also turned to Beryl when someone called mother. Viona was really surprised by the presence of her son-in-law.
"What are you doing here?" asked Beryl.
"I should be the one asking you that. What are you doing here? You're supposed to be at work!" Viona turned the question around.
Beryl admitted that he had been sent home from work, but not fired.
"Oh my! You're actually smoking? It's hard enough, you've got more money for cigarettes than you do for your wife!" accused Viona.
No one believed Beryl. "No, Mom. I'm just being slandered," he admitted.
Viona scanned her son-in-law's appearance from top to bottom. "I'm ashamed to have a son-in-law like you!"
"Is this your son-in-law? How is he so different from you?" The gold shopkeeper asked.
Viona turned to look at the shopkeeper. "Ah, yes. But he's useless and I don't want him." She said bluntly.
Beryl's expression turned stiff. His face hardened. Mouth clenched shut and teeth chattering inside. He was used to being treated like that. However, it was still very painful and furious. The feeling of wanting to get back at all those who insulted his was definitely there, but Beryl was self-conscious that there was nothing to it.
"I bought this necklace. Here's the money." Viona opened her wallet and gave the money to the shopkeeper. Taking with her the jewelry she bought with a carefree heart.
Beryl's eyes bulged when he saw the large number of hundred thousand bills. He couldn't be sure of the amount, but it was estimated to be more than two million rupiah.
Viona left the store, nudging Beryl's shoulder briefly. Beryl needed his mother-in-law's explanation right now. However, his mother-in-law had already stopped a taxi and boarded it. Beryl didn't know where his mother-in-law had gone, but the ride took him home and he thought she was home too.
Viona arrived home first. She suddenly roared, leaving her husband, who was sitting reading the newspaper, confused.
"What's wrong with you?" asked Stevan. Viona's husband, Caterine's father.
"Honey, I'm so embarrassed." Viona covered her face with her hands and burst into tears.
"What's wrong? Tell me!" Stevan got up and walked over to his wife.
"That son-in-law of ours, Beryl, humiliated me. Beryl said that I was a bad mother-in-law. I'm the mother who treats him as a maid and insults him every day. In fact, Beryl also slandered me as violent. Pretending to show beating marks and bruises that didn't exist. But everyone believed it, Beryl cried and I was cornered even more by them. I couldn't stand it, so I went home. Beryl had a cruel heart for me."
Viona was very good at making up false stories. Still sobbing, there were indeed tears coming out. No need to struggle. Viona was a drama queen!
Stevan was furious. He couldn't accept that his wife was devastated. "How insolent that child is!" he swore.
Right after Stevan said that, Beryl appeared with a gasp. Standing in the doorway, he had a bad feeling when he saw his mother-in-law crying and his emotional father-in-law.
"Mom must have complained to Dad," Beryl thought.
"Hey, you! How dare you slander my wife like that!"
Stevan gripped Beryl's shirt collar tightly. He felt like he was suffocating. Stevan's jaw hardened, his perfectly sharp eyes piercing Beryl's eyes.
"Wait, what does Dad mean?" Beryl was confused by the current situation.
"Never mind, you can't make excuses anymore. You have the nerve to humiliate my wife in public!" Stevan yelled out loud.
Humiliate what? Beryl didn't know what other drama Viona was telling. He had clearly seen his mother-in-law buying a piece of jewelry.
"That's not the story, Dad. I clearly saw that Mom went to a gold shop and bought a very expensive necklace," Beryl said.
Viona hurriedly interjected. "Look, he's saying the opposite. I know that I'm often rude to you, Beryl. But wouldn't it be possible if you didn't humiliate me like that?" Viona sobbed, wiping the tears from her face roughly.
His eyebrows knitted together. Beryl didn't understand this situation.
"But, Dad. I really saw Mother buy that necklace. I met and asked Mom where Mom got that much money? If you don't believe me, you can see Mother's bag, it must have that necklace," Beryl said.
Viona immediately stuttered, quickly hugging her bag tightly. However, her husband was already intimidating at this point.
"Give me your bag!"
Viona was suddenly terrified. Not wanting to give her bag, her husband must have asked all kinds of questions. However, when she heard the order from her husband again, Viona finally gave the bag.
Stevan seeing inside. Sure enough, he lifted a red jewelry box and saw a beautiful necklace inside. There was also a letter in the box with today's purchase date as well as the shop's name and address.
"You bought it today? Explain it to me, Viona!" Stevan also wondered how his wife could buy such expensive jewelry.
"Yes, it was me who bought it today. Beryl and I happened to meet. He didn't like me buying this necklace. Then he embarrassed me," Viona lied.
"I'm just asking, where did Mom get the money?" Beryl repeated the question over and over again.
"I got the money from your brother-in-law, Caterine's sister's husband. Are you satisfied, huh? I asked you this morning for five million rupiah to buy jewelry, but you didn't give it to me. Was I wrong to please myself by buying this jewelry? You won't be able to give me this necklace until you die. Useless son-in-law!"
The insults continued to fall from Viona's lips. She had bought the jewelry for five million rupiah, money from her sister Caterine's wealthy husband.
"I really want this necklace, is it okay if I buy it?" Viona looked at her husband with a sad face.
"It's fine. Our other son-in-law is very nice, yes. Not like the one here. He's a poor man, he's useless, he's a parasite!" teased Stevan.
It was like being stabbed by a sharp spear. That's how hurt Beryl was. There was no one to defend him, except his wife, who was busy at work. The father-in-law was mostly silent, not intervening when Viona continued to treat Beryl harshly. Only occasionally. A typical ignorant person.
"Beryl secretly smoked at work and got a reprimand from the boss. That's why he is currently at home. Look at his clothes, they're so dirty!" Viona complained to Stevan about her son-in-law again.
Stevan immediately gave Beryl a sharp look.
