What Beryl's mother-in-law had to say was definitely hurtful. Viona acted like the most miserable person in the world and led the neighbors to sneer at her son-in-law.
"I can't expect much from my son-in-law. His salary is not even enough to support his wife. Let alone going to the hospital for treatment. This is how it is. Being someone who doesn't have anything, life is miserable." Viona acted so miserable that she wasn't ashamed to be pitied.
Just look at the faces of those sarcastic women. They were so compassionate, yet cynical towards Beryl.
"Hey, Beryl. So people, don't be troublesome! You live with your mother in-laws too. You bear to see your mother sickly, having to do housework too." One of the women wearing a negligee started insulting first. Followed by hurtful words from other wide mouths.
"Yes. You should find a better job. Poor Viona, let alone his wife, right, ladies?" The person spoke while staring at the flock of gossiping women in the morning.
Provoking the atmosphere to become even more boisterous with emotionally arousing jokes. However, Beryl remained calm, despite the heat, sadness, and hurt in her heart.
"That's right. After all, even though she's just your mother-in-law, Viona is still your mother too." The mother, who was holding the spinach, replied loudly.
"Viona, be patient."
These words, instead of calming her down, encouraged Viona to tease Beryl again. It was considered an expression of pity and would make it even more dramatic.
"Thank you. For hearing my story. What else can I do, it's been four years living like this. It's very difficult, but what can I do?" asked Viona.
"Beryl is indeed a useless son-in-law! You'd better ask your daughter to divorce Beryl!"
The exclamation of one of the person made Beryl's body stiffen. So did Caterine, who had been quietly listening to all the taunts directed at her husband. Furious, yes, but Caterine couldn't defend her husband because doing so would only make the situation worse.
Viona pretended to wipe away tears. Honestly, Viona had often told her daughter to ask for a divorce from Beryl. However, for reasons of love, Caterine still wanted to maintain the household.
"I can't say anything else. My children's household, as a mother, I can only pray for the best for them." Viona elevated herself to be seen as a very patient mother-in-law. Receiving praise, that's what she wanted.
Beryl just shook his head weakly at his mother-in-law's attitude. Indeed, he and Caterine had been married for four years and during that time, who knows how many times the mother-in-law had asked her daughter to separate from Beryl on the grounds that Beryl was a difficult and useless person.
Caterine, of course, did not want to divorce Beryl. Living with your in-laws is like living in hell, Beryl thought. There wasn't enough money to just rent a house. He was forced to live in the in-laws' house and was willing to be humiliated and treated with almost no compassion, as a maid.
Beryl and Caterine currently had no children. That's because they are both very busy raising money and children cost a lot of money. They must prepare from now on before deciding to have a baby.
"Tsk, it's basic to be a lazy son-in-law. Just look, this hour is still at home. How can you earn a lot of money if you're just relaxing."
Apparently, the ridicule from the neighbors still continues, apparently. One middle-aged woman, said in a loud voice. The other woman nodded in agreement with what she had just said.
"How can you go to work if you've been doing housework all this time?" Beryl thought. The man had no self-respect, so it was useless to try to refute him because it would only make them happier to criticize him. Beryl also remembered her very low status here.
"Yes. My son-in-law just woke up, it's time to go to work."
Beryl turned to his mother-in-laws. That's a big slander.
"Mom, why ...."
"Shh!"
Beryl put an index finger to Caterine's lips. Telling her not to continue with her words.
"Just shut up. No need to defend me, okay. It'll make things longer." Beryl whispered.
"But, I can't accept you being accused like that," said Caterine who had lost her temper.
"Never mind, even you talking won't solve it," Beryl retorted.
Caterine was silent again. She could only gently stroke Beryl's arm. Trying to strengthen Beryl in this situation.
"I'll go in first, I have to cook." Viona said goodbye to them, with a fake cough that at the end.
"Come on, let's disperse too." They all returned to their respective homes.
Viona walked leisurely, but as soon as she arrived near her daughter and son-in-law, she slowed down. Viona and Beryl's eyes met for a few seconds.
Instantly, a crisp laugh escaped Viona's lips. "Huh, satisfied," she said. Then after that, she went inside.
Of course Beryl knew what the laughter meant and what his mother-in-law had said. It was none other than that Viona felt that she had succeeded in creating heat along with acting as the most miserable mother-in-law.
"I'm going to work first." Beryl said goodbye to his wife. Caterine shook the back of her husband's hand and wished him well.
The tall man, walked to get to work. He had no vehicle, not even a bicycle. City transportation was available, but what was missing was money. As a result, Beryl could only rely on his two feet to make the long journey.
Sweat poured down Beryl's forehead. He wiped his sweat repeatedly. The weather this morning was hot. Moreover, it was already 09.00 WIB. When Beryl felt tired and his throat began to dry, he tried to encourage himself. He had to be diligent in raising money to please his wife.
Also to win the hearts of the in-laws and silence the mouths of the neighbors. Only by proving that there was plenty of money, there was no other way.
Beryl had been walking on the edge, but there were still motorists who took advantage of him. Unfortunately, due to speeding, the driver splashed a dirty puddle onto Beryl's shirt.
Instantly Beryl was frozen, staring at the driver who had already left. No words of apology were uttered. Beryl could only surrender and stare at his white shirt, which became dirty and brown due to the person's actions. There was no way Beryl could not feel annoyed at this moment.
"Oh my gosh. How am I going to work later? I can't go back because I don't have any good clothes to wear. This is also a gift from work," Beryl muttered.
Beryl pursed his lips tightly. Hee was forced to work under such circumstances.
"Hey, poor guy!”
