Mahendra went to see Bahari to take him to see Sofia. He had to know where the woman who had captured his heart lived.
Mahendra arrived at Bahari's house after asking a resident near the health center.
”Assalamualaikum, Sir!” said Mahendra, still at the door.
Bahari greeted Mahendra and told him to come in. ‘We're having breakfast; come in and eat with us!’ he invited.
It just so happened that Mahendra was very hungry. The apple he had eaten had not filled his stomach. Mahendra accepted Bahari's offer and sat down in the dining room. Besides the man, Mahendra also saw a woman who was Bahari's wife and a nine-year-old boy.
”How are you doing after you got out of the health centre, Mahen?” Bahari asked.
”Alhamdulillah, I'm feeling better, Sir,” Mahendra replied.
”Thank goodness, what did you do today? If nothing else - I'd like to take you on a tour of the village. You'd be too tired to stay in your room.”
Mahendra smiled. He agreed to the invitation and would use it as an excuse to find Sofia's whereabouts later. “All right, sir. I will.”
At Sofia's house.
The woman, still in shock from her encounter with Mahendra, repeatedly took ablutions and then prayed the Sunnah. She had been too close to a man this morning, which left Anita confused.
“What took you so long to pray? Won't you be late for the library?” babbled her sister when she saw Sofia still kneeling on the prayer mat.
About 15 minutes later, Sofia came out of the room. The phasmina she was wearing was slung over her shoulder. “Anita? Why haven't you gone to Mister Ustadz's house to recite the Quran?” she asked, confused.
“I really wanted to go earlier, sis, but you didn't come out of the room. I have to say goodbye to you,” Anita replied.
“Astagfirullah, I'm sorry, sis!” Sofia pursed her lips, and then her breath hitched.
“What's wrong with you praying for so long this morning?” Anita asked again.
Sofia smiled. There was no way she was going to say what was bothering her and just shake her head. “Nothing. Go and don't forget to be careful on the road."
“Yes, sister.” Anita shook her sister's hand, then asked again, “Did you go to the library today?”
Sofia nodded. “Yes, I'm going there.”
“What about lunch?” Anita asked.
“Brother will bring it to Mister Ustadz's house later. Go and study with focus,” Sofia replied, pushing her sister, who was already late for the Quran.
Anita waved at her sister, then Sofia returned it with a smile. Instantly, she remembered the incident near the lake and immediately begged Allah for forgiveness.
“Forgive me, O Allah... I didn't mean to be alone with a man who is not my mahram. Astagfirullah,” she said to herself, then hurried to get ready for work.
Arriving at the library, Sofia recorded her name in the attendance book. Sofia also wears her identification card as a library guard.
“Wow, why did you take so long to come today, Sofia?” asked a woman who worked cleaning the library.
“Sorry, Ma'am, I had a sudden errand, so I didn't have time to come quickly,” Sofia replied with a smile.
“There's a visitor here. I took your place as the library guard because I was waiting for you to arrive.” The woman looked unhappy.
“I'm sorry, Ma'am. I promise I won't do it again.” Sofia felt reluctant.
However, her assumption was wrong. The woman laughed at her. “There's no need for you to apologize. We're only paid a quarter of the minimum wage here, so there's no need to play by the rules,” she said.
Sofia smiled. “You can do it. Thank God, that salary can also give me a life.”
“Yes, you're right. Anita will enter junior high school next month. Have you thought about her future? If you keep working here, Anita will also have to go to a poor-quality school on this island,” the woman said again.
“What can I do, Mom? I can't afford to send him to school outside the island,” Sofia said, a little sadly.
“Hum... I'm in favor of the children here getting a much better fate. The trick is to leave the island and gain knowledge outside. Our neighborhood is small: Sofia and poor Anita. You're the only one who didn't go to university. Even though you are smart,” said the woman again.
Sofia could only smile when she saw the woman near her. Leaving Sofia alone at the guard desk with a visitor whose identity is unknown. When she saw the guest list book, her eyes immediately widened like a full moon.
Outside the library, Bahari and Mahendra stand watching the surrounding medicinal plant conservation activities.
Bahari was busy taking care of the workers who had been given the responsibility of renovating the garden. Meanwhile, Mahendra remembered Bahari's remark yesterday that Sofia worked in the library.
“Sir, if I remember correctly, you said that Sofia works in the library, right?” Mahendra asked.
“Yes, that's right. Why are you asking about her?”
“I want to meet her and thank her for saving me from a snake bite,” Mahendra replied.
“Are you sure? Can you wait a little longer? I'm going to the village chief's house first to deliver the builder's message,” Bahari asked.
“It looks like I'm on my own.” Mahendra could not delay his heart's desire. Luckily, Bahari did not forbid him, and Mahendra was left alone.
Mahendra was looking for something for Sofia. He didn't want to come empty-handed. The habits he had picked up from his mother still carried over. Everywhere Mahendra went, he would bring a souvenir for the person he was going to see.
After finding a food stall, Mahendra decided to buy some fried noodles and drinks. Mahendra went straight to Sofia's location with a smile that was as bright as a cherry blossom.
For the sake of the woman who had stolen his heart, Mahendra would do anything to make Sofia like him.
As soon as Mahendra entered the library, his perspective changed. He thought that the library on this island was a favorite location because of the lack of entertainment venues. However, it turned out that his assumption was wrong. In fact, the library he visited this afternoon was very quiet.
Mahendra stepped up to the guard's desk. There was a guest book there, and he could see the number of visitors.
“Only one person?” he asked himself in surprise.
