Ch. 5Marriage

The clear and cloudy sky loomed over Bergen, Norway. Moran Heraklees stood silently in a serene cemetery, surrounded by beautiful plants and tall trees. He carried a bouquet of flowers to commemorate the birthday of Claire Heraklees, who had been peacefully asleep for almost four months. Claire, a beautiful woman, had died during childbirth, leaving behind their small baby, Olsen Heraklees. Dressed in all black, Moran, now the sole parent, gazed at the grave.

"Claire, he is growing well," Moran said softly, updating her on their only son's progress.

Claire was the daughter of Moran's business associate. They were betrothed when Moran was twenty-four, but due to their young age and educational pursuits, the marriage was delayed three years. Despite knowing each other for a long time and being engaged for three years, their less-than-four-year marriage did not bring happiness.

As a wealthy man, Moran could provide an exemplary life for Claire, but deep down, he never truly felt happy. Their marriage, which started well, later became heated with many arguments and demands from Claire. Moran's cold demeanor caused tension, leading to a heated argument one day.

Dressed impeccably, Moran hurried down the stairs to see Jasson, only to be interrupted by Claire's voice breaking the silence.

"Moran!" Claire's voice echoed.

"Claire? What's wrong?" Moran asked, lifting his gaze to find her emerging from her room.

They slept separately throughout their marriage, a different setup compared to other couples. Moran sensed something odd and went to see her.

"What's the matter this time?" he asked, noticing her growing belly.

"When will you stop your bad habits? Will you continue until my family finds out what you're doing, playing around with many women out there?" Claire exclaimed, her tone rising.

"Claire, don't you remember our agreement?" Moran reminded her.

"Moran!" Claire yelled again.

"Shh! Claire, we've had enough arguments. You're losing your mind," Moran said, silencing her.

"You claim I'm losing my mind? You selfish man, you only think of yourself," Claire muttered.

"Claire, don't forget that this marriage was created for the benefit of both families. Your family needs support from my father, and vice versa. I've treated you well as Mrs. Heraklees. You have all the rights as my wife," Moran stated.

"Moran, I don't want your money. Do you understand? I don't want it!" Claire replied.

"Then what do you want? Claire, I gave you freedom. Why do you interfere in my affairs?" Moran muttered.

"I just want you to stop playing around out there. I'm tired and sick every time I hear something about you," Claire expressed.

"Tired, you say? What about me turning a blind eye to what you're doing? Claire, even though I've never mentioned it, I know you're still involved with that man," Moran's voice trembled.

Claire had once confessed her deep love for another man before their engagement. They had grown closer under the facade of a normal couple, but behind it, they lived separate lives. Moran never intended to meet or find out about Claire's lover. He only thought of one way to free himself from the marriage without opposing his father.

"Claire, how can you say what I do is selfish when you are doing the same thing?" Moran muttered, controlling his racing heart.

"..." Claire remained silent, glaring at him.

"Tell me, am I wrong? Claire, I don't want to hurt your pride by questioning you," Moran lowered his gaze to her growing belly.

"Moran, what do you mean?" Claire asked, following his gaze while rubbing her stomach.

"..." Moran did not answer and turned away with a long sigh.

"Claire, this is enough. I don't understand what made you so irrational. You should go inside and rest," Moran said, turning to leave.

"Moran, wait!" Claire quickly grabbed his hand to stop him.

"Claire, I beg you," Moran whispered, forcibly releasing her hand.

"Do feelings not change for you? Does the time we spent together mean nothing to you?" Claire whispered, still trying to hold onto him.

"Are you going to say now that you love me?" Moran guessed her thoughts.

"Claire, I don't know how time can change everything," Claire admitted, slowly bringing his hand to her large stomach.

"..." Moran sealed his lips tightly.

"Claire, I'm too late."

Moran quickened his pace, hurrying down the stairs.

"Moran!!" Claire raised her voice again, following him.

"Moran, wait!" Claire shouted, not paying attention to her steps.

The large, usually quiet house suddenly heard a commotion from the grand staircase winding down to the ground floor.

Crash!!! Ouch...

"Claire!!" Moran shouted, chasing after her as she tumbled down the stairs.

"Aaahh!!" Claire tried to reach for anything within her grasp.

"Claire..." Moran uttered when he caught her.

He caught her before she reached the ground floor, but the impact left bruises on her hands and face.

"Moran..." Claire murmured, holding her stomach.

"..." Moran remained silent as fresh blood flowed from Claire's gown.

"Someone come here!!" Moran shouted, calling for help.

The fresh blood continued to flow; Moran wasted no time and lifted her to take her to the hospital.

During the journey, Claire continued to scream and cry, holding her large belly.

"Moran, I don't want anything bad to happen to this baby," Claire whispered.

"He will be fine," Moran replied, holding her hand.

The journey took about twenty minutes. Claire, who had been able to speak before, gradually fell silent.

Only heavy breaths continued until they finally arrived at the hospital.

As soon as they arrived, Claire was immediately attended to, and emergency measures were taken given her worsening condition and loss of consciousness.

Moran snapped back from his reverie, aligning himself with the beautiful grave in front of him.

"Claire, I did not expect this kind of ending," Moran said, touching the stone engraved with her name.

"At first, I thought we could be partners, fulfill our responsibilities for this marriage. Raise Olsen together and find happiness in our own lives even if we are no longer together," Moran expressed.

For Moran, Claire was the second person to enter his life. Although he did not have deeper feelings, he cherished her, but there was no love until the day of her death. They had been through a long marriage under an agreement not to bind each other personally.

Moran thought Claire would not feel anything towards him, but her statement during their argument saddened him.

They should have been fine if Claire had stayed true to the agreement; there would have been no debates or disputes.

"What really happened to you?" Moran asked, gazing at her grave.

Despite accepting the forced marriage, they had made a deal for only five years. After having a child, they would end the marriage and return to their previous lives.

Unlike Moran, who did not have a serious relationship, Claire had someone she loved and could reunite with after the divorce.

Moran heaved a long sigh, remaining silent for a moment as he gazed at the engraving.

Feeling it was enough, Moran rose and intended to end his visit.

"Claire, why didn't you tell me from the beginning that he was the man you loved? Surely we wouldn't have had to endure all this."
