Three individuals dressed in red jackets with black and yellow patterns entered the 10 MIPA-2 classroom. One male stood at the back, overseeing, while the other two led the classroom activities. They began with a prayer and proceeded to check the completeness of the students' uniforms. Some students with incomplete uniforms were asked to stand in front of the class for further inquiry. Alvin and Rio passed the inspection as their uniforms were complete. Arghi also cleared the check, although he took longer because he had forgotten to take off his hat, which was still in his bag. Unfortunately, Arghi's seatmate was summoned to the front.
Rio observed silently, like the other students. He had guessed it was due to the hoodie. Of course, hoodies were not allowed in the classroom or anywhere on school grounds. Why wear a hoodie when already in uniform? Arghi's seatmate seemed to match him well—both were unconventional.
"Why are you wearing a hoodie in class? Remove it immediately!" ordered the committee member, visibly annoyed by his junior's defiance. However, the student remained motionless, showing no intention of taking off the hoodie.
"Remove it now!" demanded another committee member, growing impatient with the student's stubbornness. They seemed ready to assert their authority now that they had been provoked. Rio wasn't surprised by the senior's authoritative demeanor.
"Not feeling well, sir," the student replied as an excuse. This intrigued Rio, who listened attentively. He focused on the student, who kept his head down but didn’t appear scared at all.
"What’s your name?" asked another senior who had been checking the students' uniforms and had just finished. Everyone had been inspected, and even those who had been called forward had already returned to their seats, leaving only this student.
"Jofan."
"Jofan, remove your hoodie now! I’ll count to three, or you will face consequences!" the senior warned. From his expression, it was clear he wasn't joking. Whatever the consequences, they sounded serious.
"One..."
"Two..."
"Three..."
Jofan slowly removed his hoodie right on the count of three, revealing a complete uniform. Although his face looked pale, he seemed fine—not someone suffering from a fever or stomachache.
"What’s wrong with your hand?" asked the senior, stepping forward to inspect. The entire class focused on Jofan, curious about his hand.
Jofan whispered an answer that the other students couldn't hear. The committee member leaned in to listen to his response again. Then, the committee member whispered something to his colleague. Their hushed conversation sounded serious, making the whole class fall silent, filled with curiosity but unable to ask as it was none of their business.
"Come with me," he said, then stepped out of the class, seemingly bidding farewell to the other committee members in the back. Rio was curious, and so were the other students. What had happened that resulted in Jofan being taken out?
After they left, the senior at the back walked to the front and was whispered something by the other committee member. Then, they shifted the class's attention to the introduction session. They introduced themselves first. From that, Rio learned that the senior who had been supervising at the back was the vice president of the student council. No wonder he seemed so respected.
Then it was time for the PLS participants' introductions. When it was Arghi's turn, whispers began to circulate. They seemed to remember Arghi's foolishness that morning. That helmet had really left a bad impression.
"Hi, my name is Arghian, but you can call me Arghi or, if you want something special, call me An," he said with a playful demeanor, even though the class was barely holding back laughter from the silly moment earlier. Even with his words, the class cheered, and the committee members turned away and laughed, annoyed by Arghi's narcissism. Arghi remained unaffected, "I live in Panca Sakti housing complex. Feel free to visit, but don't forget to bring some snacks...any questions? Ask appropriately, don't ask when I'll get married," he added, prompting even louder cheers. The committee couldn't handle Arghi's antics, and Rio shook his head, pretending not to know him. Meanwhile, Alvin seemed indifferent, offering a slight smile.
"Why were you wearing a helmet in class?" asked a female student, eliciting laughter from the others. That iconic moment seemed destined to be remembered until they had a reunion. Arghi looked up, thinking with a face full of embarrassment. His nostrils flared as he held back his shame.
"Actually, I was protecting you all. Why? Because my face is too handsome. You might faint if you see me directly, so it's better to hide it," he replied after thinking for a while. Even with a flushed face, he maintained his playfulness. Rio turned away, feeling nauseated by the sight of such unearned confidence.
The class remained noisy until Arghi returned to his seat with a wide smile that nearly tore his cheeks. Rio pretended not to see him and stayed indifferent, embarrassed to know someone like Arghi. When it was Rio's turn to introduce himself, the female students cheered at the sight of Rio's strong build.
"Hi, I'm Rio."
Everyone was stunned by the brief introduction. The shortest but still enough to make the girls go wild. They found it very cool and refreshing for both the eyes and ears. Such a beautiful creation of God. They were truly lucky to be in the same class as Rio. Rio would soon become popular and the talk of the entire grade, perhaps even the whole school. He was that handsome.
"Any questions?" asked the committee member, snapping the female students out of their hysteria. Rio remained silent, seeing the blushing faces of the girls and the envious shouts of the boys. Poor them. With their average looks, they had to be compared with a prince like Rio. But Rio wasn't narcissistic like Arghi. He knew his looks were not something to brag about, so he stayed quiet.
"Rio, what do you eat to be so handsome?" asked a girl, clearly trying to make a good impression.
"Rice," he answered briefly. Rio disliked introduction sessions. Most boys did. Except for Arghi, who seemed to enjoy it. Ah, Arghi was indeed a rare creature better off extinct.
"What's your hobby, Rio?" asked another girl in a similarly sweet voice.
"Sports," he replied again with a short answer. Even that brief response caused an uproar in the class. Arghi, at his seat, pouted, feeling defeated by Rio. He had spent all night thinking of an interesting introduction, only to lose to Rio's simple introduction. What a bad day. Plus, he had to sit with a problematic student on the first day of school. His misery was complete.
Rio returned to his seat just as Jofan came back. He sat down without saying a word. Alvin then went up for his introduction.
