Hero searched for five years but never found her. Anna disappeared as if swallowed by the earth, and not even a strand of her hair was found. All his efforts were in vain.
Hero stared at the photo of him and Anna, remembering when Anna forced them to take a picture together. In the photo, Hero stood still without expression while Anna smiled broadly and held Hero's hand tightly.
"Where are you, Anna?"
Harry fell with his hand holding the ice cream, and the four-year-old fell right at Hero's feet. Seeing a boy fall at her feet, Hero helped him up. The ice cream had stained the bottom of Hero's pants a little.
"Hey, boy. Be careful." Hero matched Harry's height.
"Sorry, sir. I tripped over a rock." Her tone was sad as she looked at the ice mixed with the ground.
"Yeah, no problem."
Hero realized the boy was sad because of the ice cream under his feet.
"I'll buy it for you again." Hero pointed to the fallen ice cream.
Immediately, Harry's eyes lit up with happiness, "Really, sir. You're going to buy me another ice cream."
"Yes, of course. What's your name, boy?"
"I'm Harry."
Looking closely at the face, I see that this boy's face is familiar to Hero. But it seemed as if this was their first meeting. Also, since Hero had come to the Land of M last week, she had rarely met a child of Hero's age.
"Or maybe he's the son of someone I know," Hero muttered.
"What's wrong, sir, I didn't hear that." Hero thought he was speaking to her.
"Nothing, where did you buy that ice?" Hero changes the subject and asks Harry to show her the way to the ice cream vendor.
Harry enthusiastically pulled Hero's hand and pointed toward the ice cream vendor. "There, sir, we must buy it immediately because there is a long line. I was lucky because not too many people came to buy, but when I left the queue suddenly became long. So we must hurry; I'm afraid we'll run out of ice."
Hero drew a lip line and smiled. "Alright, let's go."
Hero let Harry lead her away. His small steps didn't overwhelm her at all, even though Harry felt like running himself. But that didn't stop him from buying ice cream.
But suddenly, Harry felt his body become very light, and his feet left the ground. Harry looked at Hero's face, confused. He had not expected Hero to carry him like that without Harry's consent.
"Why are you carrying me?" asked Harry, confused.
"You look exhausted; it will be faster if I carry you. We can't run out of ice, can we?"
"Of course, we have to get it."
Since Harry wanted ice cream, he allowed Hero to carry him further and didn't protest. He was worried that Hero might get tired because Harry didn't think of himself as a baby anymore.
When Harry was little, his mother often carried him wherever they went. But as time passed, Harry's body grew heavier every day. Harry refused to be taken independently after seeing his mother's tired face when she had him.
"Sir, don't you feel tired?"
"No," Hero replied shortly.
"You are powerful."
"All men should grow up to be strong."
Harry pointed at himself. "Then I will be strong when I grow up like you."
"Sure, if you work hard. You will also be strong when you grow up."
"Then I want to grow up like Master."
Hero smiled and rubbed Harry's head. "The line is long."
Hero pointed to the ice cream vendor Harry had mentioned. Harry's words were valid; there were many people in line. The Hero stood at the end of the line, let Harry down from her arms, and let him stand beside her.
"I've said it before, but it doesn't matter that there are only 20 people in front of us. It should take a little time; they make ice very quickly. Master doesn't have to worry about standing for long."
Hero didn't mind. But since Harry took it that way, he let it go. "You seem to buy ice cream here a lot."
Harry confirmed Hero's guess: "Mom often takes me to this park. Every time we come, Mom always takes me to buy ice cream."
"Where is your mom now?"
"Mom is home; I came with Uncle Sam. But she had to go to the bathroom and asked me to wait for her."
Hero had guessed that Harry hadn't come to the park alone. He was still very young; it was unlikely that his parents would let Harry play alone in a very crowded park.
But crime is everywhere and unpredictable. With Harry's handsome and cute face, it is not impossible to attract the attention of child kidnappers.
"How old are you, Harry?"
Harry held up four little fingers. "Four years old."
"Oh, you're just a baby."
"I'm a big boy, sir, not a baby; I weigh 30 pounds already," Harry said.
Hero pinched Harry's cheeks, making his face even more adorable. "With your big cheeks, you are still considered a baby."
Harry looked at Hero and blinked a few times, taking her at her word. "Really."
Hero confirmed. "Right. Okay, now it's our turn; what kind of ice cream do you want?"
Hero and Harry's line continued to move forward. Before they knew it, they were at the front of the line, and it was time to order.
"I want chocolate chip with coco crunch topping." Harry stood on tiptoe so the clerk could hear and see his order.
"Boy, you're back." The ice cream vendor recognized Harry.
"Uncle, please give me ice cream like before."
"Where is Sam? Why isn't he with you, and is he your father?"
The ice cream vendor pointed at Hero. A few moments ago, Harry had come with Sam. Now, he came with someone else he didn't recognize.
"Uncle Sam is in the bathroom and is not my father."
"This is our first meeting; I am not his father." Hero explained.
"But your faces look very similar, like father and son."
"My father is dead, so there is no way this man is my father, Uncle."
Hero gasped. Harry's words felt like a sword piercing her heart. "Why would I feel hurt and sad?" Hero thought.
"I'm sorry, I forgot you were an orphan. Well, here's your ice cream."
"Thank you, Uncle."
After leaving the ice cream shop, Hero and Harry returned to where Harry had dropped his ice cream. He feared Uncle Sam would come looking for him, and Harry would have to return to that place.
"Here you go, Uncle Sam, sir, thank you for buying me ice cream. See you soon." Harry thanked Hero and ran to the person he called Uncle Sam.
