" So, you want to see my demon Evan?" asked Avril threateningly.
Evan didn't answer. He shook his head stiffly. "Of course not!"
Afterward, Avril laughed very sweetly. "Oh, my gosh! You should have seen your face earlier! It was ridiculous!"
Alice added. "I even suspect the blood stopped flowing for a moment!"
Evan snorted. "Oh, my gosh! You scared me, A! You too Alice! Stop teasing me!"
Alice shook her head. "You'll see! Even Mia was laughing. Johanna even looked up from her book. Thank you, A! Seeing Evan like that is worth it!"
Evan snorted. "Oh, come on!"
Jack played something on his cell phone. "Hey! Check this out!"
Matt walked over looking for a table. As he passed by, he heard Avril's voice threatening Evan in the video and the man's almost mouse-like response. Almost everyone at the popular table commented on the video.
"Oh, thank you A! Thanks to you, I have Evan's embarrassing video!" Jack said with satisfaction.
"Hey! Delete Jack!" exclaimed Evan.
"In your dreams!" rejected Jack at once.
Avril laughed amusedly. As Matt searched the table, his eyes met Avril's again. In that instant, Matt was transfixed for a few seconds. Damn it! His heart was racing just from seeing Avril. He had no idea that he missed Avril that much. How come he had a feeling toward her in a short time? The unexpectedly Avril, literally a loud girl. He thought love was indeed playing with him right now. However, Matt was hit by reality again. Avril broke his gaze for the first time and joined in the laughter with her friends. Why? Why did they become a stranger in an instant?
Matt's heart sank. He managed to find a table but he had no appetite at all. That was 3 precious seconds for Matt. The first second he felt happy. In the second second, Matt felt the overwhelming feeling of longing and the pounding of his heart. In the third second, Matt was slapped by reality and felt like he was falling. Avril seemed to emphasize how different their worlds were.
"Destiny hates me" Matt mumbled.
Matt eyed his tray with no appetite. The laughter of the popular table could still be heard and unluckily, Matt was sitting not far from the scene of yesterday's crime. Matt had only sat behind the table yesterday and of course, he was still in the radius of the popular table to watch Avril Marie Miller having fun with her group. Picking up the fork, Matt stabbed the chicken fillet with an annoying face.
"You've made another face!" scolded Warren.
Matt looked up from my head. It was rare for Matt to see Warren in the cafeteria. No, he doesn't! To be more precise, in all the time I've known Warren I've never seen him in the canteen at all. Warren always brought his food and refused to go to the cafeteria because it was a waste of his time. Warren spent too much time in the computer lab without Matt knowing what he was doing there. If you looked for Warren outside of class time, there he was. He was a total guardian of that room.
"You went to the cafeteria?" Matt said incredulously.
Warren sighed and put down his bag. He took out his lunch box and put it on the table. Warren brought sushi. Oh, one more thing. It's Warren's secret but Matt will share it. One of the reasons Warren didn't go to the cafeteria was the food. Warren wanted food that was different from the cafeteria.
"Someone managed to force me. He said you should help me as a friend. He doesn't want any more rumors" Warren said.
Matt was just about to ask who Warren was referring to when he saw Kim walking this way with a tray of food. Ah! Looks like since that day, Warren is still in touch with Kim. Maybe Kim is just like Matt and Warren. Not having any friends. Kim had already bothered him twice in the cafeteria and now she managed to attract Warren. Technically, they only have each other. Nice! Seems like Matt had finally found his team.
"Hi!" Kim said. "I hope you're not traumatized."
Matt shook his head but yes, yesterday's events affected him a little. "They don't recognize me. without my hoodie"
Kim laughed then nodded. "Good. Hey! You look better without the hoodie. Looks more normal."
Matt smiled wryly. More normal, huh? Kim was like Warren. Her compliments didn't flatter him at all. "Thank you. I Take that as a compliment"
"Of course, it was a compliment and you're welcome by the way" Kim replied. Just like Warren.
Warren was still busy with his tab. His brow was furrowed and Matt knew -whatever it was- was beyond him. Warren had a world of his own. Really! When Matt looked over at Warren, Avril was still joking around with her friends. Avril didn't turn around.
Not long after, A Class entered the cafeteria. The whispers around us were quite loud. Matt didn't know whether A Class heard it or not. What was clear was that even people's gazes were directed at Valerie.
Valerie held her chin high. The stares didn't faze her at all and Matt was impressed by that. Then, he exchanged glances with Kim. The girl gave Valerie an annoying look accompanied by a lopsided smile. However, unlike yesterday, Valerie didn't flinch at all. A Class chose to sit and enjoy her lunch quietly.
"She is still annoying" commented Kim. "Forget about that girl. Now, let's enjoy our meal my new buddy"
Matt agreed with Kim. That day, the cafeteria went on as usual in a strange way. There was no drama like yesterday of course. Matt who got a lunch buddy, A Class who stayed out of the limelight, and even Avril who returned to her real world. Another oddity? For the first time in Matt's life, he doesn't want to be transparent. Matt wants Avril to be aware of his existence.
