Ch. 22Avril's Charm

“Don't tell me you were in the cafeteria last Friday?” asked Johanna.

Avril glanced at Johanna. “I'm great, right? You guys didn't even realize I was in the cafeteria yesterday.”

Johanna glared. “You're annoying. I want to kill you right now!”

Avril laughed amusedly. “I thought you were going to kill Matt last Friday.”

Johanna gave Avril an annoyed look. “oh, I'd love to kill you right now! You even heard my conversation with that idiot!”

Avril shrugged her shoulders. They were already inside the cafeteria and Avril wandered around. Her friends were already sitting at their usual tables but that wasn't who Avril was looking for. Evan waved his hand and even shouted from his desk when he realized Avril had entered the school.

“Hey, it's A! get over here!” Evan exclaimed.

Several people turned their heads towards Avril. Oh, Evan! Why did he have to yell? Avril smiled stiffly and waved back at Evan. Now, after Avril's conversation with Matt, the girl began to wonder. Had they been disturbing the peace of the other students? It turned out that Avril and her friends were noisy.

Their friends turned around and as usual, Avril was the center of attention. They called out to Avril and even their gazes were not diverted at all. Then, there was Zed. Zed wasn't shouting like the rest of their friends. But, his gaze didn't break from Avril at all. His gaze looked calm and relieved all at once. Even without any signal, they had already prepared two empty seats for Avril and Johanna in the center.

“They were busy wondering where you were yesterday,” Johanna explained. “That makes me even more upset because I don't know the answer at all.”

Avril tapped Johanna on the shoulder. “I'm sorry to trouble you! But, like, I'm going to disappear every Friday, J!”

Johanna looked at Avril in surprise. Their pace slowed down before they reached the table and their conversation was interrupted. “Didn't I hear you wrong?”

Avril shook her head. “No. Of course not! I'd have told you by now before you tried to kill me again.”

Her friends were busy with their stories again. Jack was telling a joke and they were all laughing. Quite a fuss! But, no one dared to reprimand them like the people in the corridor did yesterday. Wait a minute, where exactly is Matt? Why couldn't Avril find him?

“You're crazy! Why did you bother doing that for him?” Johanna said in surprise.

Avril did not answer immediately. Her gaze was now fixed on the man who was taking the food. Even without turning her head, Avril knew who he was. Matt was confused about what to eat. His lips formed an unconscious smile. Oh, my! Just looking at his back made Avril feel relieved. Matt took his food and then he walked to the right of the cafeteria and chose one of the tables by himself.

“I guess, the answer is because I'm crazy,” Avril said without turning around at all. Her gaze remained fixed on Matt.

Johanna followed her gaze and at that moment she saw Matt enjoying his meal. Johanna glared again. Even though Avril was her best friend, Johanna sometimes couldn't guess the girl's way of thinking. Matt was even an anti-social human being. Why would Avril be interested in such a person? Johanna wasn't sure at all.

“Yes! You're out of your mind, A!” said Johanna.

After saying that, Johanna walked ahead and sat down at her desk. Avril was crazy! Perhaps, her decision to approach Matt was as crazy as her swimming with the shark yesterday. As soon as she realized that, Avril immediately broke her gaze and chased after Johanna. She walked straight to the table and her friends immediately greeted Avril. The girl immediately smiled friendly to everyone.

“Hey, A! Where have you been?” Evan said first. “LASHS feels weird without you.”

Avril glanced at Evan. “oh?”

Evan nodded. “Yes! I'm missing out.”

Avril laughed amusedly. “I'm back now. So, what did I miss? Please give me some good news.”

Evan nodded excitedly. “Tony threw up on the beach yesterday. I managed to record it!”

Tony gave Evan a disapproving look. “He sucks. That's disgusting, A! You shouldn't have seen it!”

Avril took the cell phone Evan gave her. “oh, I have to see it to remember it, Tony! I'll tell your son about it later!”

Some of his friends agreed with Avril's suggestion while Tony just sighed in despair. Cheers of approval filled their table. Once again, Avril managed to make the atmosphere lively. Johanna who was sitting next to Avril was just enjoying the atmosphere. Could Matt stand his best friend?

Tony snorted then the man looked at his friends one by one then nodded definitely. “I'll also tell you your shame one by one. But you're the most annoying, A! Give me at least one bad thing to tell you!”

Avril laughed then smiled confidently. “Hey! You saw me, right? You can tell me who I am later! You can tell me I'm the crazy girl who swims with sharks.”

Her friends laughed. Avril's absence was something! Avril's friends agreed that they needed Avril's presence. Evan and Jack laughed.

Jack looked at Avril. “What would we be without you?” Jack said.

“Let me watch this video first! I'll give my comments later!” said Avril.

Tony's shoulders slumped and his friends laughed again. Alice patted Tony's shoulder to sympathize with him. But, he didn't mind that much either. Tony understood that his friends were like that. In the end, the boy just sat resigned to being the hot topic in his group that day. Avril looked down and watched the video as her friends gave her pause. At that very moment, Avril took the opportunity to glance at Matt who was enjoying his lunch. Avril deliberately turned her body slightly. Afterward, Avril looked down again while holding back her smile. Oh, my gosh! Avril misses Matt! How could she keep stealing glances at Matt when she was in the middle of such a hubbub? Avril smiled. Of course, she can! Avril could make it possible because she believed she could!

“How's that for embarrassing?” said Jack.

Avril smiled.“oh, I'm sorry to see Tony! But, it's a good story to tell.”

Tony smiled.“You are Avril! You can be an angel and a devil at the same time.”

Avril never directly teased her friends. If Avril had been there, Tony was sure she would have been the first one to help her. But, afterward, Avril would also laugh like this. Well, that's what Avril was like!

Avril smiled meaningfully. “You understand me so well, Tony!”

Tony just shook his head at Avril's words. The sound of laughter could be heard. Everyone agreed with Tony's words. Johanna, on the other hand, watched her stepbrother who was eating quietly. They were so contrasting. How could they be together? Well, it looks like even that loser Matt can't resist Avril's charms.
