Matt stood still. Johanna's words just now drove him crazy. How could he not? Right now Matt was thinking about Avril Miller over and over again.
Matt looked down and watched his food. He even lost his appetite. Matt was tempted to throw his food away, leave the cafeteria, and go home as soon as possible. Then, he mocked himself. See? Matt was a loser. Avril was probably too kind or too wise to see that.
Unfortunately, Matt's stomach chose him. Matt was hungry and his stomach could not compromise at all. His stomach kept rumbling until someone passing by and picking up food turned to him. Hey! What's so strange about that? Isn't the cafeteria where hungry people go to get food?
Eventually, Matt gave up and started looking for a table. Luckily there was one empty table. It was a little close to the popular tables so Matt could still hear their chatter. It was also the right distance. After all, who would care about Matt? Only Avril was busy looking for him. Matt's steps stopped. Why did that sound important? Why was Matt feeling lonely right now?
Matt took another step forward. He sat down and placed his tray on the table and began to enjoy his meal. In the end, Matt couldn't even taste his food at all. His mind was preoccupied with Avril's whereabouts. What is this thing they call loss? Something that was never appreciated when they existed but its value was only known when it disappeared.
Was Avril still thinking about Matt's harsh words? Oh my! Avril wouldn't be that weak according to Matt. Avril was the bravest girl Matt had ever known. If someone bothered her, she would retaliate. Unlike him who was a real loser. Matt even chose to stay out of trouble. Wasn't that also one of the reasons he avoided Avril? Matt was too afraid of something new.
Someone was standing next to Matt with a tray in his hand. At first, Matt thought the person would just pass him by. No one was sitting at the table with him. Well, Kim had recently but she was looking for Warren. Realizing the person was still standing next to his table, Matt raised an eyebrow and looked around. That's right! There were no empty tables.
"Can I sit here?" The girl asked. Her voice sounded soft and low. Typical of a transparent girl like her
"Please! You can sit here," Matt said and continued his lunch. He was even afraid to sit down right away.
Matt started chewing. Matt felt a little disturbed when she chose to sit opposite him. Well, sitting next to her was annoying too. Matt only allowed it because there was no more room.
The girl had thick black hair with caramel skin. She wore sunglasses. Her lips were pink with no lipstick at all. But, Matt felt something strange about the woman in front of him. Her thick eyebrows and long eyelashes reminded him of someone. Her body was small like Avril's. Oh, my gosh! How much did Matt miss Avril?
Why did her eyes remind him of Avril? No! Avril had fair skin. Not caramel like this. Besides, it wasn't summer so there was no way Avril could change her skin color by sunbathing. This girl had slightly tanned skin.
"It turns out you like being alone," the woman said again.
Again, Matt confirmed her thoughts. His voice changed. Now, his voice was slightly higher than Avril's. Avril had a slightly heavier voice. Matt must have been crazy to think that the girl was Avril. Then, how did this girl keep changing her voice?
"Oh, my gosh! I did it!" Said the girl in front of him excitedly. Now her voice resembled Avril.
Matt looked at the girl. Why did she sound like Avril? Her voice was different earlier!
"What are you going to say now? Don't want to be the center of attention?"
She was Avril!
Matt even forgot how to eat. His eyes trailed over Avril in incognito mode. Damn! She is Avril if you look closely. Matt turned to the popular table. Evan glared when he realized Matt was watching them. But, yeah. No one realized that Avril was here at all, sitting quietly while they debated where Avril Marie Miller had gone. Matt then returned his attention to Avril who sat calmly in front of him.
"They don't know?" Matt asked incredulously.
"As you can see" Avril pulled out her cell phone and showed him the hundreds of chats she had ignored.
"I think Johanna almost got burned. She sent me 500 chats and even threatened me. Oh look, there's another message. Apparently, she can send thousands" Avril said amused.
Matt looked at Avril in disbelief. Oh, my! He had no idea that people might be just like Johanna. The cheers group even lost its formation because Avril wasn't there.
"Did I win the challenge?" Avril continued.
Matt frowned in confusion. Avril smiled amusedly as she devoured her food. For some reason, Matt's confused face looked cute. Oh my God! Avril was grateful that she was friends with Johanna. That girl would make fun of Avril again if she knew the contents of her best friend's mind.
"What challenge?" Matt said in surprise.
"You know what? You're better looking than Evan," said Avril.
Matt almost lost his mind. How could Avril say something like that so easily? He even forgot about the challenge Avril had mentioned earlier. Even though her appearance had changed, she was still Avril. The girl even still had the same spirit as Avril used to. Didn't Avril think of anything? Matt is a boy. For God's sake! Did Avril just flirt with him? She didn't even know she was flirting with a guy! Matt desperately held back his facial expression.
"You're weird," Matt said and wolfed down his lunch.
"I've heard it a hundred times. I'm not weird, Matty dear. I'm unique" Avril replied with a smile.
Even with her current appearance, Avril still hasn't lost her charm. Matt dismissed the thought. Okay. His mind was starting to lose control. But, Matt couldn't define his feelings well. He had mixed feelings because Avril had succeeded. It wasn't just that. Matt couldn't help but feel a sense of relief that Avril Miller was in front of him. Avril wasn't sick and Avril hadn't disappeared. She was here. In front of Matt and specifically for him.
Unfortunately, Avril didn't give up at all. She sticks to her plan and annoys Matt. The rest of her mind couldn't think. Why did Avril bother to disguise herself? Matt recalled what Avril had said earlier. A challenge, huh? Is this all a challenge to Avril?
"I'm older than you," Matt said irritably. How could Maddy be so relaxed?
"Yes! I call my brother by name too. He's 10 years older than me" Avril said amused. "Should I call you sir? Please don't! Just saying it gives me goosebumps."
And she, still the cheerful Avril. Avril is still Avril even though she's not Avril now.
