Ch. 8Lying?

Inside, Rose was surprised to find strict security procedures. Her bag was searched, her body scanned with sophisticated sensor devices. "Geez, do they think this new student is a terrorist? Or maybe this school has been attacked by aliens before?" she thought, half amused half annoyed after being examined by disciplinary teachers, "Maybe next time I'll just bring a real bomb, see what happens."
A soft laugh flowed from Rose's side. She turned, finding a girl with a ponytail smiling amusedly at Rose's grumbling. "Oops, sorry. That was rude of me," said the girl, trying to hold back her laughter.
Rose shook her head, smiling too. "Ah, it's okay. It is funny, isn't it?"
With a friendly gesture, Rose extended her hand. "I'm Rosetta Al—" she paused for a moment, as if realizing something. "I mean, Rosetta Oleander. You?"
The girl's forehead wrinkled, her eyes expressing confusion. 'She's asking my name? Has she never accessed the dark web?' she thought, puzzled. However, she quickly dismissed the thought and smiled widely.
"Luciana Exigera. Just call me Luci," she replied, shaking Rose's hand.
"Luci! What a beautiful name," Rose exclaimed enthusiastically. "Can I call you that?"
Luci nodded. "Of course! And you... Rose?"
Rose nodded energetically, her heart cheering. 'Finally, my first friend! And she seems nice,' she thought happily.
Suddenly, Rose remembered something. "Hey, Luci. I'm curious, why is this school named SMafios? It's so weird, right? Look at the S, it looks like a dollar sign!"

Luci fell silent, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Wait... you're serious? You don't know?"

Rose shook her head innocently, her eyes reflecting genuine confusion.

Luci sighed, as if just realizing something. "Ah, I understand now. You must have 'washed up' here because of your parents' insistence, right? To the point that you don't even know the meaning behind such a famous school's name."

Rose stammered, her mind racing to find an excuse. "Ah, that..." She swallowed, then decided to go along with this little lie. "Yeah... that's right."

Luci nodded understandingly, not detecting Rose's lie at all. "I thought so. Alright, let me explain to you the interesting history behind this name."

Luci's eyes sparkled, as if about to share a big secret. "This SMafios, Rose, is a hereditary legacy of the Severino family. That 'S' you see? It's not just an ordinary dollar symbol. It symbolizes Severino, the founder's family name. But that's not all!"

Rose listened intently, captivated by Luci's enthusiasm.

"'S' also stands for 'Solus Scale' - 'The Only School,'" Luci continued, her voice full of pride. "The Severino family had a grand vision: to create the greatest fighters and... um, 'distributors'. And guess what? Our alumni are indeed extraordinary!"

Rose nodded slowly, processing this information. "Wow, so that's the history. Very interesting..." However, behind her surprise, various questions began to pop up in her mind. Distributors? Where exactly had she stepped into?

"Attention to all SMafios High School entrance exam participants! Please gather immediately in front of the field. Once again, all prospective students are requested to gather in front of the field and line up according to their respective serial numbers!" The announcement echoed, splitting the crowd.

"Come on, Luci!" Rose exclaimed enthusiastically, her eyes sparkling with unbridled enthusiasm. Without thinking, she grabbed Luci's hand, pulling her through the moving crowd.

Luci, slightly surprised by Rose's energy, could only nod and follow. Their steps were in a fast rhythm, creating their own melody amidst the panting breaths and nervous whispers of other prospective students.

Arriving in front of the vast covered field, Rose released her grip on Luci. With a quick movement, she reached into her pocket, pulling out a piece of paper containing her serial number. Her eyes widened, a broad smile adorning her face.

"Yes!" she squealed joyfully, causing several heads around to turn. Rose didn't care. She kept flipping the paper, as if afraid the number on it would disappear if she blinked.

Luci furrowed her brow, looking at her new friend with a strange expression. "Why are you so happy? Our turns are still a long way off, aren't they?"

Rose, with sparkling eyes, immediately shoved her serial number in front of Luci's face. "Look at this! My serial number is seven hundred and seven!"

"So what? Doesn't that mean we still have to wait a long time? It's only number two hundred now," Luci leaned back, still not understanding.

"That's not what I mean, Luci!" Rose laughed cheerfully. "Don't you realize? I got an amazing number! Just imagine, seven hundred and seven. An amazing twin number! It fits perfectly with my name!"

Luci paused for a moment, her brain spinning to process Rose's words. Suddenly, a smile of understanding bloomed on her face. "Oh! Yeah, it's a perfect match!"

For Rose, the name Rosetta, which means "extraordinary," always had a special meaning. And in her view, the number seven was the embodiment of wonder itself. Seven wonders of the world, seven days in a week, seven circles of the universe, and seven basic musical notes – all confirming the specialness of the number seven in her eyes. To her, seven was the most extraordinary number among all numbers.

Suddenly, the girl tapped her finger on her chin with a distant look. "Hmm, what's this school's entrance test actually like? It's weird, isn't it, that it's not in classrooms?" She turned towards the vast field in the distance. "And why is the test only one-by-one on that big field? It's like a courage test."

Rose's eyebrows furrowed deeper. "Then, when's the written test? Or maybe..." She snapped her fingers. "Could it be an interview first?"

Suddenly, Rose stopped her monologue. Her eyes focused on Luci, who now looked deathly pale with eyes wide open. As if she had just seen a ghost.

"Uh, Luci?" Rose waved her hand in front of her friend's face. "Hello? What's wrong?"

Luci, with a trembling voice and a face as white as paper, finally opened her mouth. "Rose," she swallowed hard, "you're... you're lying, right?"
