Edith saw the white light glowing all around where she stood. She could only feel her feet on something. The light was so blinding to her eyes that Edith couldn't see anyone.
Slowly, the light began to disappear, and Edith could look around her. She saw an infinite white room, and she was in the centre of it. From a distance, Edith saw someone approaching her. The figure was a woman with long blonde hair who gave off a bluish aura. Edith saw the woman smiling at her.
"Thank you, Selena. I'll talk to her; you can take care of your werewolf again."
Edith saw the scene around her instantly turn into a garden with several trees and vines. A woman stood in front of a throne made of a large log.
"Hi, Edith. I've been wanting to meet you for a while."
The woman extended her hand to Edith. Edith unhesitatingly took the woman's hand and followed her to the throne, where they sat facing each other.
"Excuse me, who are you?" asked Edith.
"I am Ravijojla, Queen of Veela, and your grandmother."
Edith looked at the woman in disbelief. Even at her age, Edith saw no signs of ageing in the woman.
"You look very young; sorry, no offence."
"It's okay. I'm just the spirit inside the pendant you're wearing."
"So it's not my mother's?"
"Of course it was your mother's. I gave it to her after she reached Veela's maturity level. Did those werewolves give you a hard time?"
"No, they treated me very well. Sorry, I'm curious about something. What is your relationship with the werewolves?"
"Ah, it's a long story between me and Selena. You'll probably get tired of hearing it."
"Who is Selena? I don't mind listening to your story either. I want to know the truth!"
"Selena is the Moon Goddess, and I don't have tea to accompany our long chat. I'm just a spirit."
"That's okay, Your Majesty. I'm willing to listen to anything as long as I know who I really am."
"Well, I hope you're ready for everything, because we're going way back when this all started."
Edith nodded. She felt her hands being tightly grasped by Ravijojla, and she could see her surroundings turning into a vast meadow.
Edith saw herself on top of a high cliff, and below her were many warriors fighting. Edith didn't pay much attention to it until her gaze fell on the other side of the battlefield, where there was a battle between humans and wolves.
"They are not humans, but vampires!"
The woman's hand pointed towards the battle Edith was watching. Edith saw that the casualties on both sides were almost equally distributed.
"The werewolf race and the vampire clan have been enemies for centuries. Their strengths are balanced, and they also have their weaknesses. A vampire's body will burn when exposed to sunlight, which is why they can only go out at night. Werewolves cannot heal themselves; they will die if they have too many wounds on their bodies. At that time, only vampires had immortality, while werewolves did not, but they had enormous power compared to vampires."
Edith saw another woman walking beside her. She was exactly like Ravijojla—blonde and beautiful.
"You guys..."
"You're right, that's me," Ravijojla said.
The woman transformed herself into a wolf with golden fur. Edith blinked her eyes a few times to confirm her vision.
"So, the Golden Wolf is..."
"Yes, that is me. We Veelans can transform ourselves into any animal we want. I once fought with one of the savage vampires and defeated him with magic in my wolf form. At that time, wolves were the safest form of disguise."
"What do you mean by disguise?"
"Veela's abilities are elemental control magic and healing magic. Our blood is the antidote for vampires to walk during the day. One of the oldest vampires once experimented with our blood, and he tried it on himself. Since then, we have been hunted by vampires, while we cannot have children and our numbers are getting smaller. All Veela are women."
"About that healing magic, werewolves can heal themselves, but it takes time. Seth told me that once."
"That's right. This was known to Selena. She asked me to give her the gift. We made an exchange. Selena asked for the ability to heal the Veela, and in return, the Veela would have offspring without having to use magic, by the natural way of marriage."
Edith began to understand. She could grasp the meaning of the story told by Ravijojla. But Edith enjoyed the pleasure of listening to the queen's story, so she just listened quietly.
"But we have our own conditions."
"What are they?"
"Selena made a condition that I would have offspring after the werewolf race and the vampire clan reconciled. I, on the other hand, stipulated that a werewolf would only be able to have one mate in their entire life. We hold one immortal mate in high esteem throughout our lives. We will die once our immortal mate dies. Maybe a werewolf will feel extreme pain if it does not have a mate."
Edith smiled as she listened to Ravijojla's words. The Veela nation was a bit ridiculous with their ideals about love, although it was undeniable that Edith hated unfaithfulness as well.
"In my opinion, werewolves are still better than vampires. They're not greedy like vampires, who want more than just immortality. Werewolves still know themselves, because Selena asked me nicely for the grace. Unlike vampires, who hunt us just to get our blood so they can walk during the day, It is because of that consideration that I gave my grace to Selena."
"You said earlier about the immortal mate. How did that happen?"
"We Veelans will love one partner all their lives. When you choose your immortal mate, you will be linked to him or her and become one soul, after which your power will manifest itself. When you choose Seth as your immortal mate, you will be related to him. If Seth dies, then you will die too."
"Fair enough."
"I think our meeting has shed enough light on you. I'm sorry it took so long, and I'm honestly quite happy that Selena herself decided your destiny to... She's a pretty good friend, even though I didn't like her at first."
"The werewolf thing did make us misunderstand at first. I felt the same way about Seth. I hated him too because I thought he was playing me."
"They're half-animals after all; we can't deny that. Selena, are you still there?"
"Yes, I'm still here listening to your conversation. What is it, Ravijojla?"
A voice answered Ravijojla's question softly. From the origin of the voice emerged a woman wearing a white dress with a crescent moon mark on her forehead.
"I think your Luna should return to his family. We have finished talking."
"Come on, Edith. We have to go back."
