Ch. 11Desperation

'His face is so pale'
Edith carefully observed the image of the man in front of her. She had never met someone who looked like that man. She even commented to herself about how charming he was, despite his pale face.
Edith was still waiting for the man to speak again. She admired him for a moment when he put a friendly smile on his good-looking face. When their gazes met, Edith felt like she was floating in the man's eyes.
"Excuse me, Miss! May I ask you a favour? My name is Kai Gregory, and I live next door. The water pipe in our house is broken; the plumber is on holiday; may I use the toilet in your house?" greeted the pale-faced man.
"You..." Edith stammered.
"I am the grandson of the Gregory family."
"Oh yes, come in. How is your grandfather? I haven't seen him for a while."
Edith simply nodded as if she already knew the man well. Edith walked to the front door of her house and turned the key to open the door. She stepped in first and was followed by the man behind her.
"Oh, he's good. My grandfather is sleeping right now. Sorry if I inconvenienced you," Kai replied in a friendly tone.
"Ah, that's okay. Your grandfather also often helps me fix broken things in this house. The toilet at the end of the corridor is straight."
"Okay."
The man named Kai followed Edith's instructions and entered the toilet. Edith stared at him until he disappeared behind the door. Edith proceeded to the kitchen and opened the fridge. She took out some strawberries and apricots that she had saved to eat later as a leisurely snack.
When Edith closed the fridge door, she was a little surprised to see Kai behind her. He was smiling at Edith. From a short distance away, Edith could see the red colour in his eyes. It was very different from when they met earlier in the courtyard.
Edith became so nervous that the fruit in her hand slipped out of her hand, but Kai quickly caught the fruit that almost fell to the floor. Kai gave the fruit he caught to Edith while saying, "Thank you for your kindness."
"It was so cool; you were able to catch all the fruits in such a short time."
"I do rugby."
"You're a rugby athlete?" asked Edith in amazement.
"Incidentally, yes. May I know your name, miss?"
"Edith Sherwood," replied Edith smoothly.
"Well, Miss Sherwood, it's a pleasure to be your neighbour."
"Unfortunately, I'm only dropping by briefly to pick up a few things. I'll be staying with my friend."
"Oh, I hope you don't forget me when we cross paths on the street, Miss Sherwood."
"Nice to meet you, Kai Gregory."
They both walked towards the front door. Edith waved her hand at Kai for a moment before closing the door again. Edith thought that Kai Gregory was a friendly young man, and Edith liked the first impression he gave her.
Edith stepped into her room. She opened her nightstand drawer and took out a black velvet box. She opened it and took out a necklace with an emerald pendant. Edith put it on and muttered, "I almost forgot this."
Edith took out a suitcase from the wardrobe and took out some of her clothes. She also took her personal data file to submit to the school the next day. All the items she had prepared were put into the suitcase. After packing up her belongings, Edith headed to the living room and picked up the fruit basket that she had placed on the living room buffet table when she escorted Kai to the front door.
Edith re-locked the door and walked across the courtyard to the bus stop she was at. Edith looked straight ahead; from the distance she was currently travelling, she could see the bus stop, which was only a few yards away.
From a window, a man looked at Edith with a look that was hard to decipher. The man pulled the corner of his lips and said, "We'll meet again, Edith Sherwood, The Last Descendant!"
*
Edith opened the bedroom door and found that Seth had already woken up from his sleep. She could see that Seth was more refreshed after resting all day. Edith walked up to Seth and asked, "When are your parents coming home? I can't use your room forever."
"I don't know. The new vampires in France are very troublesome. They are like bears catching salmon in their spawning season. Vampires not only drink blood but also play games with the humans they bite," Seth replied still with a hoarse voice.
"I finished cooking; I brought some stock food from home and processed it. Are you hungry? I made a serving for you."
"Yes, I'm very hungry; where's mine?"
"I prepared it on the dining table."
Seth jumped out of bed and rushed towards the door. When he reached the threshold, he stopped his steps and turned around. "You're not coming to dinner with me?"
"I already ate."
Seth immediately stood still. The look on his face showed that he looked serious. Edith, who looked at Seth in surprise, asked, "What's wrong, Seth?"
"Hmmm... I thought you would accompany me to eat, but you didn't." Seth looked down languidly.
"I have to clear up my stuff. Can't you eat by yourself?"
"It's not that, ah whatever!"
Seth turned around and strode languidly towards the dining room. He really wished Edith could accompany him at the dining table. Seth had hoped too far since yesterday's incident. He thought Edith was starting to have feelings for him.
Seth finished his meal in solitude. Although the food was quite good on Seth's tongue, it still tasted bitter, like the relationship between him and Edith.
After finishing his meal, he went back to his room, picking up his mobile phone without paying attention to Edith, who was struggling with her belongings. The girl looked confused with her clothes, which looked messy on the sofa.
"Seth, can I ask you a favour? I'm having trouble tidying up my things. I don't know where to put them."
Seth stopped his steps and replied, "Just put it in my closet."
"But your closet is full," said Edith, still confused.
"Then just throw my clothes away so you can put yours in," Seth replied curtly.
"I won't throw them away. I'm just staying here; you talk weird anyway."
"Why do you care?"
"What's wrong with you? Did I do something wrong? When you woke up, you looked fine."
"You said you didn't care about me. So do as I say, or not at all."
"Oh, Edith... Come here. Let me introduce you. She is the Moon Goddess. She's the one who got me imprinted on you... Does she really know that she has done such a ridiculous thing?" Seth pointed towards the sky with his index finger.
Edith followed the direction of Seth's pointer. She raised her head and looked up at the crescent moon, which was almost covered by the night clouds. She already thought that Seth was rambling under the effects of the effects of alcohol..
"The Moon Goddess... she is Edith Sherwood, the stubborn girl. Edith, I wanted to ask you, Do you love me? Ah, of course not, and bugger it! You heard it yourself; I'm really such a fool to expect her to be my mate."
"You're drunk, Seth. Let's go inside; I'll help you."
"Eh, no-no... I still want to complain. Did I just die? I'm not an Alpha after all. My pack wouldn't be in danger if they didn't have Luna."
Seth broke the vodka bottle in his hand and pointed the broken end at his heart. He laughed as he pressed it. The black t-shirt he was wearing was blackened right on his chest. Seth winced as the tip pressed further into his chest.
"Oh my God..."
