Donnie
“High five, baby girl!” I raised my palm and Lisa hesitantly slapped it with hers.
We were in a coffee shop that was next to the library, and from our position in the building, we could see Jack outside, asking people around if they had seen us.
“Why did you make us do this to him?” Lisa sipped her cappuccino and made a face.
I counted on my fingers, “One, the man is just too smug. He deserves to be taken down a notch or two, and I'm the woman for the job.
Two, this is payback for telling me to break off my friendship with you.
Three, doesn't he look funny, running around?”
Lisa shook her head, “First of all, Jack's not smug, he's confident. Second, I get why he told you to break it off with me, remember my father also asked me to do the same to you. Third, I don't find what we did amusing, in fact, I feel guilty.”
I considered Lisa with shock, “You traitor! Why are you taking Jack's side instead of mine? Do you like him?”
I expected Lisa to deny it, but instead she shrugged and looked at her drink.
“No way, Lisa Raine Lemonde! You like my arrogant bodyguard!” I shrieked. Lisa wasn't the type to crush on people. People crushed on her, and she rejected them brutally.
“You're screaming,” Lisa's eyes darted around, and I could tell she was embarrassed.
“Sorry,” I apologized, “But this is a lot to bear. You know Jack is way beneath you, right?”
Lisa rolled her eyes, “No. He isn't. Why would you say that?”
I shrugged, “Look at yourself, Lisa. You're worth millions. I don't think Jack can match your wealth.”
Lisa scoffed, “You know, money isn't everything.”
I was taken aback. I put my hand to my chest, “Damn girl, holy one-eighty! Whatever happened to not dating broke men?”
Lisa cringed and took a sip of her drink, “I honestly don't know. What I know is, Jack is a good guy, and he doesn't deserve the tricks you've been playing on him.”
I shook my head, “That's your pussy talking, girl. We always do this to our bodyguards, or have you forgotten?”
Lisa finished her drink and looked at mine. I took it off the table exactly the same time she tried to snatch it.
“Wait! You always give me your drink when I finish mine.” Lisa protested, giving me a puppy-eyed look.
“My drink is all yours. Just say you don't like Jack.” I ordered, only half-joking. I didn't know why, but I didn't want Lisa to have feelings for Jack. If she did, she'd ask Jack out, and no straight man was stupid enough to turn Lisa down.
“Why are you against me liking Jack? Do you like him?” Lisa snapped her fingers, “Is that it?”
“Nope! No way!” I was quick to counter, willingly giving Lisa my drink. She took it with a triumphant grin and I groaned loudly. Lisa had just tricked me into handing her my drink.
“I don't like Jack, I just think it'll be weird if my BFF and my bodyguard start dating.” I explained.
Lisa winked at me devilishly, “Who said anything about dating?”
“So your plan is to have sex with him?” My heart panged as I said the words, and I wrinkled my nose with distaste. Why did I care if Lisa had sex with Jack, when I wasn't interested in him?
“Honestly, I don't know,” Lisa finished the rest of my drink and dropped the empty cup on the table, “I'm going to play it by ear.”
The door to the coffee shop opened, and two men walked in. They immediately noticed Lisa and I, and began to make their way to us.
“Don't look, but Travis and Ramon are coming towards us.” I warned Lisa.
Of course, Lisa turned to look at the men. Soon, They arrived at our table.
“Ladies, ladies,” Travis grinned and spread his arms, “Long time, no see.”
Travis was arguably the hottest man in our department, and he knew it. His fraternity was known for throwing the wildest parties, and he was known for having indiscriminate sex. Travis was tall, tan, and fit, but he didn't appeal to me in any way.
“Yeah, we don't want to see you, Travis.” I rolled my eyes when Travis blew me a kiss.
“Yo! Y'know that ain't true,” Ramon accused, making elaborate hand gestures. Ramon was stocky and had tattoo sleeves on both arms. He spoke with a fake Texan twang and tried to convince everyone he was a rapper.
“Shut it,” Lisa pointed at Ramon, “We were talking to your boss, not you.”
“Oooh, girls,” Travis chuckled, “Be nice. We're just here, trying to be nice to you. Why are you being mean? Smile!”
I shook my head with frustration, wondering why Travis couldn't take a hint we weren't interested in him. This wasn't the first time he'd imposed his company on Lisa and I.
“Okay, Travis,” I looked up at him, “The fact that you're a clown doesn't mean you're entitled to smiles from us.”
“Good one, Donnie,” Lisa laughed and gave me a high-five.
Apparently, Travis didn't appreciate my insult, because his face lost its smile and he cracked his knuckles, “I see you're going to be rude. You're too ugly to be rude to a hottie like me.”
“Did you just call yourself a hottie?” Lisa made a face, “That is soooo cringe!”
Travis' lips thinned and after a second, he hit the empty cups on our table, sending the cups flying to the left and right respectively.
One cup hit Lisa in the throat, while the other hit my breasts. We cried out simultaneously as coffee leftover spilled on us.
Travis laughed, “That's what you bitches get for running your mouths. Next time, when a hot— when I talk to you, you smile and reply with respect.”
Ramon and Travis then turned to leave us, but their paths were blocked by Jack.
Just how long has he been standing there, and why didn't he help us? I wondered, annoyed at him.
“Get out of our way, man.” Ramon told Jack.
Jack crossed his hands under his chest, a move that showed off his impressive biceps, “I'm not moving from this spot. At least, not until you've apologized to those women you bullied.”
Travis laughed hard and long, drawing the attention of everyone in the coffee shop. When he was done, he drawled out, “I sure as hell won't apologize to those bitches, who looked a gift horse like me in the mouth.”
Jack peered at Travis, “So you think you're a horse. I do see the resemblance.”
The patrons of the shop laughed and Travis reddened. I watched with trepidation as he swung his fist at Jack.
