Kenneth didn’t have a great day at work because he got called on for something he didn’t do… again. His supervisor, Mr. Keith gave him a final warning else he’ll be left jobless like he was years ago.
Kenneth has been living by the tip of the cliff all his life. Things didn’t come easy for him and that was why he got bullied almost all his life, classmates, teachers even the junior students would be paid just to remind him of how terrible he was at succeeding in life.
So, when he got the biggest turnaround of his life the day he met his biological father, which was three weeks ago, it made him believe that truly he was made for greatness.
He was married to Cassandra Henry, the daughter of the wealthy Jordan Henry. They have been married for the past three years and since he married her when he was still at his lowest, Cassandra and her family made it their ultimate goal to throw insults and bad words at him whenever they can.
Anytime they see him, they remind him of how miserable he is and how miserable he will be till he dies but all that changed now that he knows he is the son of a wealthy man, and not just a wealthy man, a man with great power that his words were carried around like gold. Gerald Goldstein.
Kenneth thought about how his life would change when people start to put the respect he deserve to his name, and it made him swell in joy, so he ignored how tired he was and went to a flower shop to get his wife a bouquet of flower and a box of chocolate.
When he got to the shop, Gary the owner of the shop groan in distaste when he saw him, he didn’t want to entertain Kenneth because he wasn’t an important person in society ad after severally warning him to keep away from his store, he was here again.
“Hi there Gary” Kenneth happily greets him but Gary grunted out a reply and continued ignoring him. “I need a lovely bouquet of white roses with a box of your expensive chocolate” Kenneth grinned. “It’s for my dear wife Cassie”
Gary continues to ignore him and turned away from Kenneth. Kenneth frowned at how Gary was behaving to him so he walks closer to him to say his request but Gary pushed him away from him.
“What’s wrong with you man? Can’t you see that I don’t tend to the likes of you? Wretched and miserable” Gary yelled at him, his voice attracted the attention of other shoppers who looked at Kenneth in disdain.
“Bu-” Kenneth was going to say something but Gary shuts him up.
“Will you shut your poverty mouth up and get out of my shop? Your wife and her family don’t regard you, you live in your wife's father’s house, shameless man” Gary spat at him.
“What a shame,” a shopper said in a voice that sounded hostile.
“Terrible shame,” another said.
“Get out of my shop before I call you a thief in front of everyone” Gary spoke loudly to him then bumped his shoulder against his shoulder as he went past him to answer a reputable customer that came inside the store.
Kenneth felt bad and humiliated that people looked down on him for being poor but he didn’t want to leave without getting the gift he had in mind so he went to a cheaper store to get them and went home just at the same time his wife came in. she ignored his greeting on her way inside the house but he didn’t mind, because he was sure that she will like his gift.
When he enters the house, he sees his parents-in-law and brother-in-law sitting by the dining table talking about something but they stopped when they saw him enter and a distasteful look washed over their faces.
“Our day just got worse because an unfortunate entity has emerged” Fisher, his brother-in-law said harshly and Diane his mother-in-law laughed.
“I think we should throw him out of our house to get the bad luck he carries around away from us,” Jordan said then stood up and walked over to Kenneth “Where have you been aside being at your miserable job?”
“I closed in late and decided to buy my wife some lovely gift,” he said to him with a smile.
Jordan smacked him across the face and then threw his head back in laughter along with his wife and son as they laugh at what Kenneth said.
“A gift from a miserable man?” he threw the gifts he was holding on the floor then pushed him hard. “How is that supposed to make my darling daughter happy? A smelly burden from a wretched man like you? You are so shameless and incompetent, can’t even afford your own place, you live with your wife and feed her money, what stupid gift do you bear for her then?” he said angrily to him.
“You are a disgrace to yourself and your entire poor family” he pushed him again then walked away from him to sit beside his wife. “Go ahead and give it to my daughter, she’ll give to you what you truly deserve,” he said and the three of them ignored him and continued talking.
Kenneth felt even more humiliated by what they did to him but he didn’t want his father-in-law’s words to prevent him from giving his wife this gift so he went upstairs to meet her.
He had to knock on the door and plead severally before he was allowed to get into their room.
“Be quick with what you want to say, I have important people to give my attention to” Cassandra eyed him and hissed.
Kenneth smiled that at least she gave him audience then he starts talking “Cassandra my lovely wife, I thought about you when I got these flowers and chocolate, I would be glad if yo-” he couldn’t finish his sentence because Cassandra grabbed the flowers and chocolate, threw it on the floor and stepped on like a child throwing a tantrum.
“Can you see why no one like you or regards you? You are retarded, poor, and have no respect for yourself. How dare you give me such an evil burden?” she cried.
“It’s a gi-”
“It’s not a gift okay? Something from a wretched human like you is a burden, not a gift. Gifts come from wealthy well-respected people like me and my family and for crying out loud, I wonder why I got married to you in the first place, you have no place in this family or in the rich folk's world. You will continue to be a pauper for the rest of your entire miserable life” she screamed at him.
Kenneth was going to say something but she shuts him up by pushing him hard.
“I have a very important guest waiting for me and who deserves my ultimate attention, I regret even opening the door to see you, and don’t you ever in your life give me a present. I don’t want to be infected with your wretchedness” she warned then slammed the door across his face.
Kenneth didn’t have words to react to what happened but he couldn’t get over the sour feeling and the pain her words caused him. He thought to himself, that if she knew of his identity then she will respect him and love him more. He went to sleep in the storeroom he is left with whenever she has her visitors in their room.
