She waited for Gabe's reply but she didn't receive any. Even after she was done cleaning everything, there still wasn't any text message from him. She bit her lower lip and sighed.
Maybe he was still mad at her. Maybe—
Chiara stilled when she heard a knock on her apartment door. She immediately stood up and opened the door. Her lips parted when she saw who was outside. It was Gabe.
“Gabe.”
“Chiara.”
They both greeted each other.
“I'm sorry,” Gabe said with a small smile on his face.
Chiara shook her head. “No. I'm sorry, Gabe.”
If there was someone who needed to apologize, it was her. “You’re right. Until now, I'm still a fool for him. I was such a fool that even after getting hurt and cheated on, I was still hoping that he'd come back." She bit her lower lip when she felt the corner of her eyes tearing up.
“This time, I'll already put an end to my foolishness. I have already finally accepted that Tony and I are already done. That he's no longer coming back to my life. This time, I will finally let go. For real…”
“Come here…” Gabe softly said before he pulled her in for a hug. Chiara felt like something warm covered her heart. His warm hug brought comfort to her.
She didn't know how long she was inside his arms before he let go of her. “So…we’re okay now?” he asked her, smiling softly at her.
Chiara returned his smile and nodded at him.
Gabe raised his hand and fixed some strands of her hair that were covering her face. “I missed you, Chiara," he muttered to her.
Chiara didn't know why her heart was suddenly racing fast inside her chest. “Uh…”
It was only now that she realized that they were still both standing at the doorway of her apartment. “Uh… get in, Gabe.”
Chiara saw how Gabe's eyebrows furrowed after he entered her apartment.
“I will finally let go of what Lord Voldemort gave me,” Chiara told Gabe when he gave her a questioning look. She pointed at the black garbage bag that was full of stuffed toys.
“Lord Voldemort?” Gabe asked, raising her brows.
“Uh, my ex,” she said, pursing her lips.
The corner of his lips curled up in a smile. “So, you decided to give him a moniker. He who must not be named, huh?”
Chiara chuckled softly. "Well, I don't want to lose any more money to you," she answered.
Gabe chuckled before his eyes went to the garbage bag on the corner. “What are you going to do with that?” he asked.
She shrugged. “I actually still don't know. I was thinking of throwing it."
“I have an idea.”
“WHAT are we doing here, Gabe?”
Chiara asked him when his car stopped at the parking lot of the Mendez Medical City, one of the biggest hospitals in the Metro.
“Let’s give that to the kids here in the hospital,” Gabe said while giving a look at the garbage bag seated in the backseat of his car.
Chiara bit her lip. “Uh, Gabe, I think we still get permission from the management of the hospital before we can do that."
Gabe just simply smiled at her. “Don't worry about that. I've got that covered.”
Chiara frowned at him."What do you mean, Gabe?" Her lips parted when she remembered Gabe's surname. Gabriel Mendez. Mendez Medical City. “Your family owns this hospital?" she asked him, wide-eyed.
“My family.” Gabe nodded at her.
She knew Gabe came from a well-off family. But she had no idea that he was that rich.
"Come on, Chiara." Gabe smiled at her as he opened the car door for her.
When they reached the lobby of the hospital, a woman with a white coat went to them.
“Gabe,” the woman greeted Gabe with a smile on her face. “What are you doing here?" she asked as she glanced at the garbage bag Gabe was carrying."And what's that, Gabe?"
“Stuffed toys.”
Chiara silently examined the woman in front of them. She looked young for a doctor.
If she wasn't wearing a white coat and there was no stethoscope on her neck, she wouldn't have thought she was a doctor. She seemed more like a model or an actress with her look.
The woman turned to her and smiled.
“Mary, this is Chiara,” Gabe said, glancing at her before his eyes went to the woman. “Chiara, this is my sister Mary.”
Now that Gabe told her that the woman was his sister, she finally recognized the resemblance of the two. Just like Gabe, the woman's long hair was wavy.
“Pleased to finally meet you, Chiara,” Mary said to her with a big smile on her face.
“Nice to meet you,” Chiara said, returning her smile.
Gabe told his sister the reason they came to the hospital.
“Okay, follow me,” Mary said to them with a smile.
“She’s the one who changed your clothes that night,” Gabe told Chiara while they were riding the elevator.
Chiara's lips parted as she glanced at Gabe's sister who was now talking to another doctor in front of them.
They left the elevator on the third floor. May told them that they were going to the cancer ward. She found out that Gabe's sister is a pediatrician. She also found out that this hospital offers free medication to children with cancer who are less fortunate.
“Good morning kids,” Mary greeted the children in the room. Then she introduced Gabe and Chiara to the kids.
“Doc, am I going to get ugly if I lose all my hair?" she heard a little girl ask Mary.
Chiara looked at the kid. Her hair had already gone thin due to the medication.
“Of course, not, sweetheart,” Mary gently said to the kid. “Even if you go bald, you're still beautiful.”
Gabe and Chiara also went to the girl. “Hi! What’s your name?” Gabe asked the kid.
“Janice.”
“Janice, Doctor Mary is right,” Gabe said softly, smiling at the kid. “Even if you lose all your hair, you're still one of the prettiest girls I've seen in my life."
