"Yeah," Indigo whispered beside Chastity.
The scene was beyond beautiful. Most people like the sunset more than the sunrise. But for Chastity, she liked the sunrise more. It symbolized hope. That after dark, there's always light.
“Thank you, Indigo…" Chastity muttered while they were on the road back to Manila. "Thank you for giving me a chance to be with you again…"
Indigo just looked at her and smiled. "I'm happy I got to watch the sunrise with you."
She bit her lower lip to stop herself from smiling. "Uh, so see you tomorrow at school?" she asked when they reached Karen's house.
“I won’t be at school on Monday,” Indigo answered.
"Oh," Chastity swallowed. "Are you... going somewhere?"
“I’ll be in Ilocos," Indigo answered. "It was for our thesis, Chas. We'll stay there for three days."
Chastity pursed her lips. "Uh, take care then, Indigo."
Indigo smiled. "Thank you, Chastity. I'll be expecting your texts while I'm away."
She pouted her lips. “I always text you, Indigo. You're the only one who's not replying."
Indigo pursed his lisp. “I’ll reply to your text from now on.”
Chastity couldn't help but raise her brows. "Really?"
"Yeah. I'll text you," he answered like a promise.
"Okay, then." Chastity found herself biting her lower lips again to stop from giggling. “Thank you, Indigo,” she breathes. “It was one of the best dates of my life.” She tiptoed and planted a kiss on his cheek.
Before Indigo could react to what she did, she already got out of the car and ran to the gate.
SHE missed him. It's been three days since she last saw Indigo. Charity didn't know if he was already back from his trip from Ilocos.
Indigo said that he'd reply to her text but she never once received a text in the past three days.
That day, Chastity was going to her next class when she saw Red.
"Red, have you seen Indigo?" she couldn't help but ask him. "I didn't know if he was already back from Ilocos. He never texted me."
Red's lips parted. “Chas, you didn't know he's in the clinic?"
Her eyes widened in concern. “Huh? What happened to him? Is he sick or something?"
“He has a fever. I guess it was because of the long trip. He said he was back in Manila just last night."
Chastity thanked Red before he went to the clinic. But then she stopped at the doorway when she saw that Indigo wasn't alone.
“You made me worried sick, Indigo. I thought something serious happened to you!" Kassandra said in her concerned voice.
Indigo was lying on the clinical bed. But he was not alone. Kassandra was there beside him. The girl occupied the stool beside his bed.
The scene was familiar, it already happened before...but this time, it was Kassandra and not Chastity who was beside Indigo.
“I'm fine, Kas.” she heard Indigo say.
Kassandra hugged Indigo. “Please, don’t make me worried again. Next time, don't go to class if you're already feeling unwell."
Chastity felt like thousands of needles pricked her heart at that exact moment. Before Indigo and Kass noticed, she already turned her back and walked away.
She bit her lower lip as tears escaped her eyes.
Ugh. You're such a fool, Chastity.
She wanted to get mad at herself for forgetting that there was a Kassandra in Indigo's life.
She was wiping her tears away… when her surroundings suddenly turned dim.
“Chas, why are you crying—”
"Hey, Chastity. You're looking pale."
"Chas!"
She blinked when she heard Mark and Karen's voices. Before Chastity could answer them, she already lost consciousness.
Chastity woke up in a white room. She looked around and immediately realized she was in a hospital.
Karen's mother, Andrea, immediately went to her. “Chas? You're finally awake," she said, heaving a sigh of relief.
She gave the woman a faint smile. "Aunt Andrea… you're here."
The woman sighed as she touched her hair. "I've called your mom, Chas. She's very worried about you."
Tita Andrea knew her condition. Before she flew to Manila, her mother already told Karen's parents about Chastity's condition.
“Chas…”
Chastity looked at Karen who just went inside the room. Her best friend's eyes were red and puffy from crying.
“What is the meaning of this, Chas? You're… sick?” Tears fell from her eyes as she held Chastity's hand.
“I've got leukemia, Karen,” Chastity said with a sad smile. "I'm sick."
“No. No...” Karen shook her head. “You're just kidding me, right?” she desperately said as more tears fell from her eyes.
Chastity's chest tightened as she helplessly looked at her best friend.
“Why… why did you keep it from me, Chas? Why... Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Six months ago, Chastity was diagnosed with stage two leukemia.
"I'm sorry, Karen," Chastity said in a small voice. She bit her lower lip to stop her own tears from falling. "I just didn't want you to worry. I'm sorry… for keeping this from you"
Karen shut her eyes. It took her a moment before she managed to calm herself. "Is that why… did you come here? Is that why you wanted to get Indigo back?"
Chastity closed her eyes and nodded. "I love him, Karen… I'm still in love with him. And I want to be happy with him again."
Life was short. That reality struck her. That's why Chastity would do the things that would make her happy until she has the time to do it.
That's what she's doing right now.
She might look pathetic and selfish… but at least, she was doing something that would make her happy in the end.
“Chas…you have to tell Indigo,” Karen said after a moment of silence.
Chastity shook her head. "No, Karen. I don't want him to pity me. I didn't want him to forgive me and go back to me just because I'm sick and dying. I wanted him to get back to me because she he loves me."
