The rate at which my heart pounded was directly proportional to the rate at which I sweated. Literally, I could hear my own heartbeat. And the armpit region of my peach shirt was soaked.
Mr Davis was just a seat away from mine. He was checking my neighbour's note and he was shaking his head in disappointment.
I braced up. Hoping to find appropriate answers to whatever he would ask me.
"Faith I'm sure that you are through with yours, right?" My eyes widened a bit. I didn't know when he got to my desk.
The look on his face was undiscerning. I didn't know if he talking like that was because of trust that I would have done my assignment as the committed student I am. Or that, he wanted to make sure that I wasn't as dishonest as the others.
"No," I heard myself reply.
Already, more than half of the class were kneeling down in front of the classroom. Only few bright students that attempted to answer the questions, were relaxed on their seats. While the unchecked rest were obviously uncomfortable as he neared their desks.
"Let me have a look then." Did he not believe my answer?
I pushed forward to him my long Chemistry note that had a butterfly sticker at the front. He collected it and flipped over to the recent pages where he could possibly find any assignment.
"It wasn't completed." He looked up from my note. "Do it right now and submit before lunch."
My face illuminated. Did he just exempt me? My joy was boundless.
He continued the assignment checking on other students who many fell victims of undone assignment.
"All of you on your knees get up." He sighed after staring at them for a minute or more, wondering what to do with them.
The defaulters were joyful. When did Mr Davis become such kind hearted?
"Thanks Sir," Some muttered as they made their way to their various chairs with a disconcerted look on Mr Davis face.
"I meant, stand up and follow me to the school field." He rephrased.
Groans filled the air.
"Fast!" He ordered and the gloomy students complied.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just like the gentle moon that lulls the child to sleep, the melodic sound emanating from the music room was hypnotic, even to the soul.
I wreathed into the room as I felt something strange surge through me.
That kind of feeling you get when you are just about to do something ultimate and incredible.
The room was half filled. Mostly with the art students who were doing some practicals.
I fed my hungry eyes with the activities of people around me. Three girls were giggling as they watched a boy play the violin. Then a group of dedicated students were watching Mr King the Music teacher as he taught them the basis of playing a recorder.
Beautiful.
I observed. Everyone here was just in that mood. And I soon joined in when the song playing at the background got changed to Wild Things by Alessia Cara.
Not too hard to notice, the Piano was the only unused instrument in the room. All of the others were used but not that one.
"Faith? Faith! When did you get here?" I turned at the sound of an excited voice.
That was odd.
"I decided to pay you a visit." I twitched my lips, unsure if I just told a lie.
The excited girl was Helen. And Helen was a good friend in the Art class.
"I doubt. It's looks like you are here for the melody not me." She accused. "And I'm jealous."
"You talked of joining the music club last time, right?" That was to confirm if I was still interested.
"Mm, take me to the Music teacher."
Helen chuckled lightly. "That's bold of you. Well, he's with the junior students. Once he's done with them, I will do just that."
I nodded. "No one wants to play the Piano."
Helen waved it off like an unimportant topic. "No one knows how to handle that stuff well. And no one is willing to learn. Or are you?"
I shook my head.
We talked for a while. Laughed for a while. Played for a while. And took a break for a while.
"Mr King is asking if the senior beside you is a newbie." Someone walked up to us and directed his words to Helen.
We both turned to Mr King to see him looking our way. He was patently done with the tutorials.
"Good for you. Better for me." Helen stood up from the chair she sat on as she signalled to me to follow her.
"How? What is better for you?" I quizzed.
"If you get to join this club then I will have yet another partner. It's not everyday one gets to see a new clubber." She answered.
We got to Mr King and he offered us seats.
"What has the thin and fat girl to discuss with me?" He rubbed his carpet beards as he looked expectantly at us.
What?
I shared a glance with Helen. She seemed cool and collected. But me?
I was highly offended.
Without an ado, I stood up to leave. Helen's eyes was telling me to get my butt back on the seat, but my mind was hell bent of getting out of the room now and forever.
"You're such a coward." Mr King's voice echoed and I stopped right in my tracks. "Unfocused gullible child."
This was shit. And I was so used to shit that I knew so well how to get rid of one, if I wanted to.
"Excuse you, Sir?" I had a look, once I turned to face him. "With all due respect sir..."
"A sword is sharp. That's it's unique characteristic. But when it's derelict, it gets blunt. And it's no more sharp edged." Mr King talked on.
"I'm implying," He paused and gave me a look. "that you are useless until you decide against that."
From anger, it slowly turned to discombobulation.
Was he a psychic or what?
However, I still had a bit of rage within me.
"Get out of this room until you decide for a future!" He yelled, getting the attention of everyone present in the room on us.
The earth suddenly stopped revolving around it's axis. The feeling within me was unexplainable. It was an entanglement of rage and embarrassment.
This wasn't me. I knew it.
The Faith I knew wouldn't have done what I did.
"I'm not stepping my feet out of here, Sir. All I came was to have a sensible discussion with you but I guess that was a total wrong idea. I have a future. A bright one for that matter. And please, I would appreciate you minding your use of words. They hold more gravity than you think."
Each words was dropped hotly out of my mouth.
An uproar of laughter emanated from Mr King. He then stopped and held his lips in a thin dark line that could pass as a smile.
"A giant just rose within you." He said with a face as serious as ever. You would never believe he just laughed like an idiot minutes ago.
"If I hadn't gone harsh on you, you would not know your ground to fight for it." He added.
"You see, sometimes you just need a catalyst to alter your life path forever." He finished, leaving me to recollect myself.
